CALGARY, Alberta (Ticker) -- Derek Morris burned his former Calgary Flames teammates in overtime.

Morris, who played for Calgary from 1997-2002, fired a shot past Miikka Kiprusoff 2:24 into the extra period as the Colorado Avalanche snapped the Flames' season-high three-game winning streak with a wild 6-5 triumph.

Alex Tanguay had three assists, including one on the winning goal, to increase his league-leading point total to 31 for Colorado, which scored five goals on just 22 shots in regulation.

After a cross-ice pass from Adam Foote, Tanguay skated up the right boards and passed in front to a streaking Morris, who sent the puck just inside the left post to snap Colorado's two-game losing streak.

"I'm more happy with the win, that's for sure," Morris said of beating his former team. "We played hard tonight, we made a few too many mistakes and they capitalized. But that's a team that has a good future. They are playing their system and they're playing hard."

"Obviously, you don't expect to see a 6-5 shootout nowadays especially the way Calgary's playing defensively, with the way Kiprusoff's been playing," Colorado coach Tony Granato said. "But tonight was one of those games where a lot of funny bounces (occurred) around the net, people went to the net extremely well. Like I said, two teams worked extremely hard and we were fortunate enough to get the chance in overtime and get the two points."

In a contest that saw neither team hold greater than a one-goal lead, Calgary's Andrew Ference tied the score, 5-5, on a slap shot past David Aebischer with 8:07 left in the third period.

"It's nice that we had some offensive production, but really it favors their team a lot more getting into a game like that," Ference said. "We're a defensive team and we take a lot of pride in the fact that we don't allow a lot of goals. We can't kid ourselves, we're not going to come up with points in too many games if we give up that many goals."

The Flames' Shean Donovan and the Avalanche's Teemu Selanne each scored a shorthanded goal. Selanne staked Colorado to a 4-3 lead after stealing the puck from Kiprusoff and wrapping it around the net with 2:50 left in the second period.

Oleg Saprykin evened the contest with his second goal of the game just 62 seconds into the third period. Travis Brigley - another ex-Flame - gave Colorado a 5-4 edge by tapping through a cross from Tanguay through Kiprusoff's legs with 14:05 remaining.

Flames superstar right wing Jarome Iginla, who has yet to score a goal at home this season, had a great opportunity to tally from right in front of the net with three minutes left in regulation after getting a feed from left wing Matthew Lombardi. Iginla shot the puck right into Aebischer.

"(Iginla) could have won the game in the third," Flames coach Darryl Sutter said. "I think he had opportunities to win the game for us and that's better than not."
