ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- The St. Louis Blues have Doug Weight to thank for their latest victory in more ways than one.

Weight accentuated his defensive play of the game by scoring with 42 seconds remaining in overtime, giving the Blues a 4-3 triumph over the Boston Bruins.

After St. Louis pulled goaltender Chris Osgood for an extra attacker in the final minute of the third period, Weight raced back to tie up Sergei Samsonov, preventing the Russian left wing from scoring into an empty net.

"I was able to get a really good hook, a legal hook on him, pinned him against my body and stick and just kicked it out," Weight said. "It was fortunate and it just saved the day."

Play turned up ice and Keith Tkachuk completed a nifty passing sequence by scoring his 11th goal with 29 seconds to go, sending the game to overtime.

Osgood made a fantastic save on Samsonov with time winding down in the extra period, and the Blues quickly headed in the other direction.

"He was sitting there the whole time," Osgood said. "I just anticipated, tried to get as close to his stick as I could. It hit me in the arm."

"Great chance in OT, Osgood makes a huge save on Samsonov," Bruins coach Mike Sullivan said. "They came back down the ice and scored."

After a pass from Pavol Demitra, Weight carried into the Boston zone and wristed a shot from the top of the right faceoff circle that beat goaltender Felix Potvin to the far side.

"Pavs gave me the puck. I had a pretty big gap, tried to get as much speed as I could," Weight said. "I tried to go far side. Fortunately, it went in."

"It went right underneath the bar," Potvin said. "I didn't see him coming down the middle."

Demitra and rookie Mark Rycroft also scored for St. Louis, which improved to 9-1-1 in the last 11 meetings with the Bruins, including a five-game winning streak.

Martin Lapointe, Joe Thornton and defenseman Nick Boynton tallied for Boston, which lost for the third time in four games.

"We had the win in our back pocket, even though we didn't play our best hockey game," Bruins center Brian Rolston said. "Those are the ones you have to pull out, regardless."

In the final minute of regulation, Mellanby fed Petr Cajanek from behind the net. Spotting Tkachuk streaking down the slot, the Czech native threaded a pass to his teammate, who flicked it past Potvin to tie it at 3-3.

"I came (off the bench) and just went to the net," Tkachuk said. "The puck came right to me, I couldn't believe it. It was just good timing."

"He just beat me clean," Potvin said. "I didn't expect him to go far side. It went underneath my blocker."

After a scoreless first period, the Bruins took advantage of a miscue by Osgood to grab the lead. Trying to clear the puck up the middle, Osgood lifted it into Lapointe, who knocked it down and glided across the slot before firing into a vacant net at 2:15 of the second.

Demitra knotted it 2:38 later with his fourth goal in five contests and Rycroft beat Potvin midway through the period for his first tally in 28 NHL games.

"I kind of sat in the slot, watched the play happen," Rycroft said. "When the puck got to me, the defenseman gave me a little bit of time and I just tried to snap it right side as quickly as I could."

Thornton evened up things 80 seconds into the third and Boynton pounced on a rebound in the slot at 9:50 for his first goal of the season.
