Preview | Boxscore

DENVER (Ticker) -- The Colorado Avalanche have made several changes since last season and one of the best has been the acquisition of Steve Konowalchuk.

Konowalchuk scored twice, including the go-ahead goal in the second period, and David Aebischer made 31 saves for his league-leading 11th win as the Avalanche held on for a 4-3 victory over the struggling New York Rangers.

Obtained from Washington on October 22, Konowalchuk has three two-goal games with Colorado and has scored seven goals in his last eight games. Colorado was 2-3-0 before the trade and 10-2-1-1 since.

The Capitals' former captain opened the scoring 6:52 into the contest. After Alex Tanguay doubled the lead with 3:26 to play in the first period, Anson Carter and former Avalanche Martin Rucinsky scored in a four-minute span midway through the second to forge a 2-2 tie.

But Konowalchuk scored on another rebound with 3:24 to go in the second to put Colorado ahead and Cody McCormick doubled the Avalanche lead on the next shift.

Aebischer extended his personal winning streak to six games, turning aside 13 shots in the final 20 minutes. He was beaten by Matthew Barnaby with 3:32 remaining but made several solid stops to remain unbeaten in four career starts vs. the Rangers.
