EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- The Edmonton Oilers kept on rolling with the help of a little redirection.

Ryan Smyth scored with 16 seconds left in overtime, giving the Oilers a rare home win over the Calgary Flames, 2-1.

In a tightly contested game that featured 58 shots and superb goaltending, Smyth made the difference by keeping his stick on the ice.

Mike York skated down the right side and threaded a pass to Smyth slicing toward the left goalpost. With Calgary's Shean Donovan draped all over him, Smyth got his stick down and redirected the puck past goalie Jamie McLennan for his sixth goal of the season and 27th career game-winner.

"I was just skating up the ice. (Marc-Andre Bergeron) gave me a nice pass and I held it while Smitty was driving to the net, I just threw it there and he made a great play on it," York said.

"We had a chance going down, they come back and Ryan drives the net and scores, it's that simple," Calgary coach Darryl Sutter said. "I think Donovan checked over his right shoulder and Ryan went by him on the left. He's not at fault, he thinks he's covering two guys and he's trying to hold the middle, waiting for everybody to get back."

It was just the second goal in nine games for Smyth, but the Oilers improved to 5-2-3 in their last 10 games.

Edmonton's Ty Conklin followed his first NHL shutout with a 33-save effort. He was at his best early, turning aside 12 shots in the opening period.

"Ty played really good again, he had a lot of confidence in there," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "He makes easy saves look simple, and that's the sign of a confident goaltender. He gave us the opportunity to win the hockey game."

Conklin is filling in for starter Tommy Salo, who is day-to-day with a bruised bone in his hip.

"For the most part, we didn't give them close in scoring chances and that sure helps," Conklin said. "I know Tommy is going to play as soon as he's ready, but for now, I'm just happy to get a chance to play and to contribute to the hockey club any way I can."

Calgary had a four-game winning streak in Edmonton snapped and has lost five of six overall.

"I thought we played our hearts out again, but we're just not getting rewarded," Sutter said. "If we just stay with that, we'll be fine."

McLennan held Edmonton scoreless for more than 60 minutes and made 22 saves.

"Both goalies were great and we thought we played a good road game, but they played well, too, and with 15 seconds left they got the win," Flames captain Jarome Iginla said. "We got an important point, but you hate to give Edmonton the win."

York got the Oilers on the board 3:15 into the contest. On an odd-man rush, Radek Dvorak got a drop pass from York but could not control the puck. York regained control, deked McLennan and slid the puck along the ice for his fifth goal.

York has goals in back-to-back games after going six games without one.

Matthew Lombardi tied it with 2:54 left in the second, beating Conklin on wraparound that trickled through the goalie's pads.

"We came out with one point and we've got to keep our heads up," Lombardi said.
