ST. PAUL, Minnesota (Ticker) -- The Detroit Red Wings followed a new third-period script.

Steve Yzerman scored with 7:42 left in the third period after teammate Pavel Datsyuk was stopped on a penalty shot as the Red Wings rallied for a 1-1 tie with the Minnesota Wild.

Detroit squandered third-period leads in two of its previous four games, including Friday's 4-3 overtime win at Chicago. Trailing 1-0, the Red Wings earned a point thanks to Yzerman, who has three goals in his last three games.

"Had we been down 2-0, it would have been tough to come back, but down one, we weren't overly concerned," Yzerman said.

Yzerman gloved a pass out of the right corner from defenseman Chris Chelios and wristed a shot from the bottom of the right faceoff circle past goaltender Dwayne Roloson for his ninth goal of the season.

"Steve Thomas goes to the corner and takes the 'D' out, and Cheli was able to pinch in and just threw it out," Yzerman said. "I was cutting through the middle and he threw it hard across. I think that fooled the goalie."

"Yeah, he comes through, he got a big goal," Detroit coach Dave Lewis said. "It was a big-time goal-scorer's goal."

Less than 10 minutes earlier, Roloson outwaited Datsyuk, getting his left arm on his penalty shot. Datsyuk used a similar drag move to beat Dallas' Marty Turco on Wednesday.

"I had a pretty good idea where he was going. I saw the breakaway he had the other game," said Roloson, who made 27 saves. "I was hoping he was going to do the same thing and stay with him the best I could."

Roloson caught a break in the final minute of overtime when Mathieu Schneider's shot from inside the blue line was blocked by Minnesota defenseman Brad Bombardir and caromed off the crossbar.

"I heard it hit the metal, I was hoping that it went out," Roloson said.

Andrew Brunette scored on the power play for Minnesota, which has just one win in its last four games (1-2-1).

"I thought we played a better game tonight. I thought we were re-energized for tonight," Brunette said. "We didn't give away a whole lot. ... We got the tie, but I thought we played well enough to win."

Brunette's goal at 8:26 came on the Wild's first shot of the second period. With Dominik Hasek sprawled on his back in the crease, Brunette slid the puck under the goalie's outstretched left arm.
