Calgary Flames topped by Nashville Predators 1-4

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (Ticker) -- They don't call the Nashville Predators' hometown "Smashville" for nothing.

Goaltender Tomas Vokoun stopped 29 shots, then charged into the corner and rammed his shoulder and elbow onto Jarome Iginla with 25 seconds remaining as the Predators battled to a 4-1 victory over the Calgary Flames.

Vokoun's check started a melee that involved several players, although only three minor penalties were handed out. After totaling 23 majors last season, the Predators already have 24 this season.

This was not the first time Vokoun and Iginla mixed it up. In Calgary last January 16, they collided in the left corner, setting off another fracas.

"I was late to the puck and he would beat me and probably score a goal," Vokoun said. "It was an accident it was him, but I would go for that hit on any player."

"It was a little bit of a surprise to me," Iginla said. "I guess it was from last year when I was actually going for the puck and I accidentally ran into him. He probably has a long memory."

Nashville coach Barry Trotz was less than pleased with the encounter.

"We looked at the tape and Iginla was five feet offside," he said. "It wasn't a smart move on Tomas' part. He's our No. 1 goaltender, it is 4-1 and you don't want to get him hurt on a nothing play."

David Legwand ended a five-game goal-scoring drought and set up a power-play tally by rookie defenseman Marek Zidlicky as Nashville won its second straight following a 1-7-1 stretch.

After serving a tripping penalty, Legwand hustled out of the box to break up a play inside the Calgary zone. He sent the puck to teammate Scott Hartnell, got it back inside the left faceoff circle and put a one-timer past Sabourin's stick.

"The last couple of games, I have been in a rut," Legwand said. "I am trying to get myself out of it and hopefully, I did that."

Vokoun's best stop came on defenseman Jordan Leopold's wrist shot from the low slot during a power play with 8:12 remaining.

"That is an easy-looking save, but you have to do good things before the puck hits you in the crest," Vokoun said. "It's all about being quick and reading the play."

Defenseman Kimmo Timonen collected three assists and Hartnell had two for the Predators.

Vladimir Orszagh broke a 1-1 tie at 5:38 of the second period and Adam Hall beat Dany Sabourin on a breakaway to cap the scoring with two minutes to go in the third.

Defenseman Toni Lydman had the lone goal for the Flames, who failed to build on Wednesday's 6-2 triumph at Chicago and have lost four of five.
