BOSTON (Ticker) -- The Boston Bruins used a productive power play to continue their mastery of Western Conference foes.

Martin Lapointe and Joe Thornton each notched a goal and an assist as the Bruins scored three times on the power play and held on for a 4-3 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Lapointe set up rookie Patrice Bergeron's power-play tally that opened the scoring midway through the first period. He fired a slap shot from just inside the blue line that was blocked in front of the net. Brian Rolston passed the puck to Bergeron, who came around the left goalpost and put it past Ty Conklin.

"We knew Edmonton was an agressive team and we made sure to move the puck often," Bruins coach Mike Sullivan said. "The first few games at home, we had trouble creating energy. We want to get the first (goal of the game). We set out to do that and we did. We had help tonight to get the result we wanted."

After rookie Jarret Stoll tied it 51 seconds into the second period with his second goal in as many nights, Lapointe put Boston ahead for good with a power-play tally at 12:25. He one-timed a cross-ice feed from Thornton into the right side of the net.

A little more than two minutes later, Thornton made the Bruins 3-for-3 on the power play with his third goal of the season.

"The power play and penalty-kill was a disaster," Oilers coach Craig MacTavish said. "Special teams need work and we need to rethink what we need to do on the penalty-kill."

Boston ended up 3-for-4 on the power play while the Oilers were scoreless in five chances.

Sandy McCarthy gave the Bruins a 4-1 advantage with 3:24 to go in the second. He held the puck behind the net, looking to pass, but moved out front, whirled and put a backhander inside the right post.

"It's a big bonus for our line, we've been playing hard and solid all season and it's a nice reward," McCarthy said. "Teams that have four lines that produce will win. We're all pretty good hockey players and we proved we belong."

"Sandy gets undervalued for what he brings to the table. He's a workhorse," Sullivan said. "We tried to encourage him to take the puck to the net."

The Oilers rallied in the third period as red-hot Raffi Torres scored his seventh goal and Shawn Horcoff added a shorthanded tally. But they could not get the equalizer past rookie goaltender Andrew Raycroft, remaining winless in their last four trips to Boston.

Raycroft made 31 saves for the Bruins, who improved to 6-0-1-0 against Western Conference teams.

"The Western Conference is more open, they don't play as much as a trap," Lapointe said. "When play is open, we do well and we can create more offensive plays."

Boston, which has earned points in each of its last seven games (4-0-1-2), has won four in a row vs. the Oilers and is 36-17-6-0 against them all-time.

Conklin turned aside 35 shots, but the Oilers completed a 2-2-1-1 road trip.

"We didn't have our legs early," Edmonton left wing Ethan Moreau said. "We found them and played well, but the penalty-kill is letting us down."
