Anaheim Mighty Ducks over Washington Capitals 4-2

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- While everything is going right for Sergei Fedorov and the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim, nothing is going right for Olaf Kolzig and the Washington Capitals.

Fedorov scored two goals, including the go-ahead tally in the second period, leading the resurgent Ducks to a 4-2 victory over the reeling Capitals.

With 4:23 left in the second period, Fedorov took a shot from high in the Washington zone, using a screen from Rob Niedermayer. The puck struck Kolzig on the right pad, bounced into his left pad, then trickled behind the goaltender to make it 2-1.

"I think the 2-1 goal was a big goal for us," Anaheim goalie Martin Gerber said. "It is good on the road to get the lead in the second period and go to the break with it. That gives us confidence for the last period."

Anaheim cruised thereafter, getting tallies from Jason Krog and Steve Rucchin early in the third period to break open the game.

Dainius Zubrus scored a meaningless power-play goal late in the third for Washington, which has lost six straight and is winless in eight games (0-7-1) since a season-opening rout of the New York Islanders.

"We need to be more resilient as a team," Caps coach Bruce Cassidy said. "When we got behind, we didn't have the resiliency to get back into it. We have a goalie in there who is the heart and soul of this team and they have to play better for him and get behind him, because he is our guy."

Kolzig made 27 saves but fell to 1-6-1. He declined to speak to the media after the game.

"(Fedorov's go-ahead goal) was a lucky break," Capitals right wing Mike Grier said. "A goal like that shouldn't beat you in this league, especially with the guys we have in this room. We should be able to bounce back from that. And tonight, we didn't."

Fedorov has seven points in the last six games, four of which have been wins. Since beginning the season with five losses, the defending Western Conference champions are unbeaten in five of the last six contests (4-1-1).

"It was hard to know how much time it was going to take," Fedorov said of his adjustment to a new team. "The first four games of the season, I was thinking on the ice too much. Now I think less and I'm just reacting."

Fedorov had just three assists in the first five games as he struggled to find a niche in Anaheim's system.

Gerber made 23 saves for his second win in as many nights and third in his last four starts.

"When you get to play each game, you can go right back in and try to do it better," the former Swiss Olympian said. "It's a good feeling."

Gerber helped the Ducks kill six of seven penalties, yielding only Zubrus' goal with the outcome all but decided.
