Calgary Flames down to Colorado Avalanche 2-4

DENVER (Ticker) -- On an evening honoring future Hall of Famer Patrick Roy, Jim Cummins enjoyed a special moment.

Cummins scored his first goal in 2 1/2 years and Alex Tanguay extended his points streak to seven games with two assists as the Colorado Avalanche posted a 4-2 triumph over the Calgary Flames.

After Colorado players paid tribute to Roy by wearing his No. 33 during warmups, the three-time Vezina and Conn Smythe Trophy winner, who retired in May as the NHL's winningest goaltender, had the number retired by the Avalanche.

"We've played with Patrick for a really long time, he deserves every credit he can get," center Peter Forsberg said. "It was great. He's the greatest goaltender ever."

"That was very nice," Colorado coach Tony Granato said of the ceremony. "It couldn't have been better. It was great to be a part of it."

Roy's former teammates carried the emotion into the first period, scoring power-play goals just over six minutes apart for a 2-0 lead.

Martin Gelinas netted the first of his two tallies early in the second to halve Calgary's deficit, but Cummins beat goalie Jamie McLennan midway through the period to restore Colorado's two-goal edge.

"When you've got two great goal-scorers (Paul Kariya and Teemu Selanne) out of the lineup, someone has to pick up those goals," Forsberg said. "It was great to get a goal from Jim Cummins. It really helped out tonight."

The goal was Cummins' first since March 18, 2001, a span of 27 games.

"Other guys are better at (scoring) than other guys," Cummins said. "I just need to take care of some other areas first and foremost, and then bang a couple home. That's what I plan on doing and hopefully, I can follow up with a couple more."

Defenseman Rob Blake ended a four-game pointless streak with an empty-net goal that capped the scoring.

David Aebischer, Roy's successor, made 26 saves for his third straight win.

"It was well-deserved for Patrick and it was his night tonight, and I think the whole team worked tonight for him," Aebischer said. "It's a good win for Patrick for all he did for this organization."

With Calgary captain Jarome Iginla in the penalty box, Forsberg took a feed from Tanguay and began skating behind the net. Spotting Milan Hejduk in the low slot, Forsberg backhanded a pass that the Czech wristed in at 8:25 of the first period for his seventh goal.

"It was a bad penalty on my part to put the team down four minutes at the beginning of the game," Iginla said.

The NHL's third-ranked power play cashed in again later in the period.

Martin Skoula got the puck to fellow defenseman Adam Foote at the blue line, where he fired a slap shot toward the net. The puck deflected off the stick of a defender and past McLennan at 14:39, giving Colorado a 2-0 advantage.

"The power play early was very sharp," Granato said.

Calgary scored on the power play 3 1/2 minutes into the second period. Chuck Kobasew raced down the right side and made a cross-ice pass to Gelinas, who redirected it just inside the left goalpost for his first goal of the season.

"It feels good to score," Gelinas said. "I got two kids (on my line) that are eager to make things happen. They were throwing a lot of pucks at the net. I just drove it and I was fortunate tonight that they were right there."

Former Flame Travis Brigley forced defenseman Robyn Regehr to cough up the puck behind his own net with less than eight minutes remaining in the period and Charlie Stephens pounced on it.

Recalled from Hershey of the American Hockey League before the game, Stephens fed across the slot to Cummins, who lifted his own rebound by McLennan for his 24th goal in 469 NHL games.

"It was a great forecheck by Brigs," Cummins said. "He chipped it to Charlie and I was going to the net. It kind of surprised me. He made a great play to get it to me. I failed on the first shot, but the rebound came right to me and, thank God, I put it home."

"They did a great job," Granato said. "The shifts they had, they had limited ice time, they were effective. They finished their checks, went to the net, they battled like crazy."

Gelinas drew the Flames within 3-2 with a power-play tally 32 seconds into the third, but Blake sealed Colorado's third win in four games with 30 seconds remaining.

"Obviously, it's nice to chip in, but it's nice to win hockey games," Gelinas said.
