Chicago Blackhawks tie Phoenix Coyotes 2-2

PHOENIX (Ticker) -- Ladislav Nagy and the Phoenix Coyotes have to wonder what it's going to take to win again.

Nagy had a brilliant shot stopped with 2:20 left in overtime as the Coyotes settled for their third straight tie, a 2-2 deadlock with the Chicago Blackhawks that left them winless in six straight games.

A minute after Nagy's sliding backhander was stopped by Jocelyn Thibault, Chris Gratton got a perfect pass from Mike Sillinger as he streaked through the slot, only to put his shot right into the knee of the Chicago goaltender. Shane Doan put a shot off the outside of the goalpost in the final seconds.

"I try to give confidence to my team," said Thibault, who made 35 saves. "I hope they think if it gets by them, I will be there for them. (The Coyotes) were really coming at us tonight."

With 13:17 left in regulation, Phoenix right wing Branko Radivojevic took a pass from Sillinger at the blue line, skated in and put a backhander past Thibault to forge a 2-2 tie.

"They don't quit," Phoenix coach Bob Francis said. "That is three games in a row we have come from behind."

Radivojevic, a 22-year-old from Slovakia, showed why he is a highly regarded prospect as he glided through the Blackhawks' zone and split a pair of defenders before making a difficult shot look easy.

"We played a good third period tonight," Blackhawks coach Brian Sutter said. "We just over-backchecked and our defensemen got caught. ... We knew they were not going to lay down in the third period."

Thibault was solid the rest of the night, helping the Blackhawks extend their unbeaten streak to five games. They completed a 1-0-3 road trip.

Phoenix's Zac Bierk also was sharp, stopping 26 shots.

"I though twe battled hard and outplayed them," Bierk said. "We probably deserved to win. I think we had a renewed commitment to our defensive game and paying attention to detail."

Igor Radulov notched his first goal for Chicago, opening the scoring 12:07 into the game, but Gratton quickly equalized, tying it 22 seconds later with his first of the season.

Chicago regained the lead when Ville Nieminen scored his first goal during a second-period power play. The Blackhawks had an extended man advantage after Coyotes defenseman Ossi Vaananen was given a five-minute major and a game misconduct for boarding Scott Nichol in the latter stages of the first period.

"I don't agree with the call," Vaananen said. "They gave me five minutes and I'm out. I don't think it was a dirty hit. I don't think I deserved to get a game misconduct." The game otherwise was crisply played.

Nieminen's power-play goal is the only one Phoenix has allowed in its last 18 shorthanded situations.
