Calgary Flames defeat Edmonton Oilers 4-2

EDMONTON, Alberta (Ticker) -- Even Krzysztof Oliwa got into the act as the Calgary Flames rediscovered their offense.

Oliwa scored his first goal in nearly three years and Craig Conroy, Jarome Iginla and Steve Reinprecht each had a goal and an assist as the Flames rallied for a 4-2 victory over the Edmonton Oilers.

Calgary managed just nine goals in its first seven games before breaking out for a season-high four in this one. After watching their best players struggle in the opening weeks of the season, the Flames got scoring from some familiar faces and some surprising places.

"We've had a tough time scoring goals," Iginla said. "We need to give our goalies some offensive support, too, and it was great to see tonight."

Edmonton had a 2-1 lead in the second period before Calgary scored three unanswered goals, capped by Oliwa's first tally since February 28, 2001 - a span of 115 games. He has 15 goals in 349 career contests.

"Every goal is important. It's not about who scores the goal, it matters that the five guys on the ice work together to create chances," he said. "It happens to be I was the lucky one. It's (115) games and three teams later, so it's just good to put that behind me."

Calgary goaltender Jamie McLennan protected the lead, stopping nine shots in the third period, as the Flames won for the fourth time in six games.

"It was a tough game, some real battles, but these games are always fun to play in," Iginla said of the 'Battle of Alberta.' "Every guy answered the bell and that was a real emotional lift for our hockey team."

Tempers flared early as there were 19 penalties in the opening period, including five fights resulting in 70 penalty minutes.

"We prepared ourselves to get out there and play hard and physical and do whatever it took to win the game," said Oliwa, who fought Edmonton's Georges Laraque two seconds into the game. "The fight was just a good way to start the game. We wanted to start the game that way, and it worked for us."

"Typical 'Battle of Alberta,' right off the bat," Edmonton coach Craig MacTavish said. "We got in a few scraps, both teams were hungry for the game."

Calgary outshot Edmonton, 10-5, in the opening 20 minutes and took the lead with 8:20 left, when Conroy one-timed a cross-ice pass from Reinprecht on the power play. It was Conroy's first goal of the season.

"Relief was the word," he said. "I was very excited, but my emotion was just relief that one finally went in. We were able to keep battling through and eventually, it felt like tonight was going to be our night."

The Oilers, who had just nine shots in the first two periods, scored on consecutive attempts early in the second as defenseman Alexei Semenov and Ryan Smyth beat McLennan with tallies 81 seconds apart.

Both goals came with the man advantage for Edmonton, which failed to score on three consecutive power plays in the first 10 minutes of the game.

"We got the lead, and then we had trouble answering their pressure," MacTavish said. "They forced us to chip the puck up the walls a lot, and that resulted in some turnovers that they turned into scoring opportunities and a couple of key goals."

Iginla sparked the comeback for the Flames, forging a 2-2 tie when he deflected defenseman Andrew Ference's shot past Edmonton goalie Tommy Salo with 2:35 left in the second period. It was Iginla's second goal of the season.

Iginla contributed on the next scoring play, delivering a pass to Conroy as he was run into the boards. Conroy made a centering pass to Reinprecht, who fired a wrist shot past Salo for the decisive tally.
