Calgary Flames top Minnesota Wild 3-2

ST. PAUL, Minnesota (Ticker) -- The Calgary Flames found a combination to jump-start their anemic offense.

Jarome Iginla and rookie Matthew Lombardi scored less than four minutes apart in the second period and the Flames held on for a 3-2 victory over the Minnesota Wild.

Calgary managed just five goals in its first four games, with Iginla - the NHL scoring champion two seasons ago - held without a point. The lowest-scoring team in the league has seen its top line of Iginla, Craig Conroy and Dean McAmmond fail to record a point.

The struggles prompted coach Darryl Sutter to make a change, putting Iginla and Lombardi on the same line.

"I love playing with all these guys," Iginla said. "Every line was going pretty strong tonight. It's nice to get a win. They all feel good, but this one was great because everyone gave 100 percent."

The move paid off when Lombardi assisted on Iginla's first goal of the season just 1:45 into the second period to forge a 1-1 tie.

"I just want to go out there and win," Lombardi said. "It's great to be playing with Iggy. He's one of the best players in the league."

"Lombardi was flying," Iginla said. "He's excited to make plays, he's strong, he's good down low and he doesn't hesitate at all."

Calgary, which was held scoreless against Buffalo on Saturday, had not scored since the second period of Tuesday's 1-0 victory over Edmonton, a span of 101 minutes.

The Flames took the lead for good 3:56 later as Lombardi scored his first career goal. He took a shot from the left corner that hit goalie Dwayne Roloson's left skate and went into the net.

"I got the puck off the boards (and) I was trying to get it through his legs," Lombardi said. "It bounced off his skate or something. I got lucky."

"Early in training camp, guys try and compete and some guys are able to step up. Matthew did just that," Calgary assistant Jim Playfair said. "He has good speed and can take the puck to the net as you saw tonight."

McAmmond added an insurance goal in the third period that proved important, as Minnesota defenseman Andrei Zyuzin scored on the power play with 15 minutes left.

"It was nice to see us compete for the full 60 minutes and create some quality scoring chances," Playfair said. "It was nice to see different players step up. We need that if we are going to play better."

Roloson, a former Flame, stopped 24 shots for the Wild, who remained winless this season (0-4-1-0). They have surrendered a league-high 20 goals while scoring only 12.

"We have to be desperate," Minnesota coach Jacques Lemaire said. "There is no doubt. We only have one win. We've got to look better as a team. Until we get over this, it's going to be tough. Everyone has to bear down on what he has to do and focus on his job."

"The difference between winning and losing in this league is so slim," Wild center We Walz said. "It's a confidence thing right now. When you're having a hard time generating offense, all your problems are magnified."

Calgary's Jamie McLennan started in place of injured goalie Roman Turek and made 20 saves. He has won all three of his starts this season.

Minnesota's Richard Park, who missed the first five games with a knee injury, made his season debut and opened the scoring just over five minutes into the game.

Iginla continued his dominance over the Wild with the tying goal. He has seven goals and 10 assists in 16 career games against Minnesota.

The Wild halved the Flames' 3-1 cushion on the power play five minutes into the third. Zyuzin took a pass from Andrew Brunette at the top of the crease and fired a wrist shot past McLennan.
