MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Dolphins either threw Dave Wannstedt a farewell party or celebrated his return. They won't know until Monday.

Olindo Mare kicked a 22-yard field goal with three seconds left as the Dolphins ended their season - and possibly Wannstedt's career with the team - with a 23-21 victory over the New York Jets.

Miami owner Wayne Huizenga has already made his decision about the future of the Dolphins' head coach but will not make an announcement until Monday.

"I'm going to visit with Wayne in the next day or two," Wannstedt said. "He'll call me whenever the schedule fits. Players back next year, coaches back next year - I'm not going to get into that right now. Now is not the time because I don't know anything. Nothing has been determined."

The Dolphins could do nothing to influence Huizenga's decision, but did plenty to make his potential finale a successful one.

Jay Fiedler completed 21-of-29 passes for a career-high 328 yards, a touchdown and an interception. His favorite target was Chris Chambers, who had career bests of nine catches for 153 yards.

"I think it's a true testament to certain individuals that Jay and Chris have career days," Wannstedt said. "For them to focus, to come out and perform like they did, I think that's indicative of our entire team and the way it was all year with these guys."

Miami had a 20-10 halftime lead before New York scored 11 straight points, capped by Chad Pennington's one-yard touchdown pass to tight end Anthony Becht with 8:58 remaining.

The Jets failed to complete the two-point conversion but stopped the Dolphins on the ensuing drive when rookie linebacker Victor Hobson intercepted Fiedler in the end zone.

New York could not get a first down and was forced to punt. Miami drove 45 yards in just under three minutes to set up the game-winning kick.

"This was typical of our season," Jets coach Herman Edwards said. "We played a lot of close games. We had an opportunity to win those games, but we didn't do it. Obviously, we have to do a lot better job as a football team and it all starts with me."

The Dolphins finished the season at 10-6, making it the first 10-win team to miss the playoffs since San Francisco and Philadelphia in 1991. They are the first AFC team to achieve the dubious feat since 1986.

"It's a lot better than nine, I know that, winning 10 games," Wannstedt said. "We expected to do better than that. We didn't accomplish what we wanted to. That's not a secret."

Pennington bounced back from his career-worst five-interception performance last week, completing 22-of-28 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. He did not throw an interception.

"We didn't become a statistic today," pennington said. "We fought hard and we didn't lay down like some teams have or had a chance to."

New York's Curtis Martin rushed for 92 yards on 24 carries, eclipsing 1,300 yards for the fourth time in nine NFL seasons.

Miami running back Ricky Williams ran 20 times for 73 yards and finished the season with 1,372 - nearly 500 yards less than last season when he led the league.

Mare opened the scoring with consecutive field goals before Williams capped a 54-yard drive with a 16-yard scoring run just over five minutes into the second quarter. New York responded with an 80-yard scoring drive that Martin finished with an eight-yard TD.

Fielder connected with Chambers on a 20-yard touchdown pass to give the Dolphins a 20-7 lead, but the Jets answered with 14 consecutive points on two field goals, a safety and a touchdown.
