OAKLAND, California (Ticker) -- The rain wasn't going to stop Clinton Portis.

The second-year back rushed for a season-high 170 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Denver Broncos to a 22-8 victory over the Oakland Raiders and a sweep of the series between AFC West rivals.

With a steady rain falling, Broncos coach Mike Shanahan used a conservative game plan, handing the ball to Portis 34 times.

"It was a game where I knew I was going to get the ball a lot," said Portis, who scored on a one-yard run with 4:24 left in the first half to give Denver a 14-8 lead and added a two-yard touchdown run with 3:15 remaining in the fourth quarter.

"Portis made adjustments in the way he cut, so as not to lose his footing," said Shanahan, who improved to 14-4 against his former team. "He stayed disciplined with straight ahead runs and I was really pleased with the offensive line play as well."

The NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year last season, Portis has scoffed at the sophomore jinx, recording eight 100-yard rushing games and 1,234 yards. Last season, he rushed for 1,508 yards and scored 17 touchdowns.

Denver (7-5) bounced back from a disappointing home loss to Chicago and will host the Kansas City Chiefs next week. But the Broncos are four games behind first-place Kansas City with four to play, leaving them essentially hoping for a wild card spot.

"It's just nice to get back on track after last week," Shanahan said. "We can only take care of what we do starting next week against Kansas City. We can't worry about what other teams do at this point."

The loss was the seventh in eight games for the Raiders (3-9), who committed three turnovers, failed to reach the end zone and were penalized 11 times for 89 yards. It was the first time they failed to score an offensive touchdown since the 2001 AFC championship game loss to Baltimore and coach Bill Callahan lambasted them after the game.

"We've gotta be the dumbest team in America in terms of playing the game and I'm highly critical because we give games away," Callahan said. "We give em away! Period. And it's embarrassing that I represent that and I apologize for that. If that's the best we can do, that's a sad product."

Sebastian Janikowski kicked a pair of field goals for Oakland, which also scored a safety on a punt blocked out of the end zone by O.J. Santiago.

Both quarterbacks struggled in the wet conditions. Denver's Jake Plummer threw for just 105 yards, including a four-yard touchdown to tight end Shannon Sharpe. Before the touchdown, Raiders linebacker Eric Barton was flagged for an unnecessary roughness penalty when he put a late hit on Plummer out of bounds on a third-down play.

"They did help us a couple of times with penalties and we capitalized on that," Plummer said. "In the second half, we really ran the ball well."

Oakland's Rick Mirer was 13-of-30 for 153 yards.
