KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Eight games into the best start in franchise history, the Kansas City Chiefs seem to be hitting their stride.

Priest Holmes ran for three touchdowns and Trent Green threw for two more as the Chiefs remained the only undefeated team in the NFL with a 38-5 rout of the Buffalo Bills.

Kansas City is off to its best start and has won eight straight games for the first time in the team's 44-year history. The Chiefs are the lone unbeaten team in the league after the Minnesota Vikings lost to the New York Giants on Sunday.

The Chiefs won each of their previous four games by seven points or less but throttled the Bills in their most lopsided victory of the season - dominating both sides of the ball.

Kansas City struggled early and trailed 2-0 after Pierson Prioleau blocked Jason Baker's punt through the end zone less than five minutes into the game. But the setback seemed to energize the Chiefs, who scored 38 of the game's final 41 points.

Dante Hall - known mainly as a punt and kick returner - had a 67-yard catch-and-run touchdown just over five minutes after the blocked punt, sparking the Chiefs as he has all season. Teams have been kicking the ball away from Hall, but he still found his way into the end zone.

"I haven't been effective on special teams, so today it was important that I contribute offensively," he said. "My job is to make big plays."

Hall has 11 career touchdowns, averaging 79.8 yards per score - the best mark in NFL history for a player with at least 10 career TDs.

Holmes added scoring runs of four and 13 yards less than seven minutes apart in the second quarter.

Tight end Tony Gonzalez caught a one-yard touchdown pass from Green in the final seconds of the second as Kansas City took a 28-5 cushion into halftime and never looked back.

"The first half, I thought we were outstanding," Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said. "We can't play much better than we did. I felt Buffalo was a good football team and I think the fact that we got after them early helped."

"We didn't make enough critical plays," Buffalo coach Gregg Williams said. "They made big plays in the first half that put us on our heels. We gave up big plays. That's the frustrating thing about it, giving up big plays that we haven't given up."

Holmes capped the rout with a 15-yard score, helped by a crushing block from Green, who took out cornerback Nate Clements to clear the way.

"I came around the corner and saw Priest cutting back," Green said. "One guy was wearing 51 and one was 22 and I thought there was no way I was hitting (linebacker Takeo) Spikes. I went on the (cornerback) and after seeing the replay, I don't know who hit who."

"It's huge. He looked like a fullback," Kansas City fullback Tony Richardson said. "Trent didn't just block him, he smacked him."

Green was 20-of-35 for 273 yards. Holmes ran for 83 yards and reached 41 touchdowns with the Chiefs, surpassing Christian Okoye for second most in team history.

Kansas City forced seven turnovers, including five interceptions.

"I thought the defense really, really got after them," Vermeil said. "When you take the ball away seven times, well, I don't even know what the stats are on that."

Buffalo quarterback Drew Bledsoe was 23-of-34 for 153 yards. He fumbled and was intercepted three times before being replaced.

"Very disappointed, very frustrated right now," he said. "The Chiefs are obviously an outstanding football team, but I anticipated that we would play better than we did."

"It's not just Drew," Williams said. "We need to make some plays to keep it close and we didn't keep it close. We've bounced back before. They're pros and there is still good leadership in that locker room."

The Chiefs had three sacks, and although they had trouble containing Travis Henry, who ran for 124 yards, it hardly mattered.

Kansas City became just the 12th team to go 8-0 since the NFL switched to a 16-game schedule in 1972. The team has a bye next week before playing six of its final eight games against teams that are currently under .500.

"I know a team that was a very good football team that was 15-1 and didn't go to the Super Bowl," said Vermeil, referring to the 1998 Minnesota Vikings. "Chances are we're a playoff team, but it doesn't mean we're going to be a Super Bowl team."
