BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- Jamal Lewis angered the Cleveland Browns by doing a lot of talking but backed it up with the biggest rushing day in NFL history.

Lewis shattered Corey Dillon's record with 295 yards, including a franchise-record 82-yard touchdown run, as the Baltimore Ravens rolled to a 33-13 victory over the Browns.

Entering the game, Lewis had rushed for 543 yards in four meetings with Cleveland, including a career high-tying 187 yards at Cleveland last season. His previous success against the Browns had him predicting that he would set the rushing record on Sunday.

"That was a little phone call with (Cleveland wide receiver) Andre Davis and he told me he wanted me to get the ball 30 times," Lewis said. "I told him if I got the ball 30 times, it was going to be a career day. I'm not going to say I predicted it.

"(The Browns) know what kind of back I am. I don't think they expected a day like this, but it came."

The fourth-year running back had 30 carries and bested the NFL's previous mark held by Dillon, who ran for 278 yards with the Cincinnati Bengals on October 22, 2000. The franchise record of 227 yards was set by Priest Holmes in 1998.

"It was beautiful," Lewis said. "We took it one play at a time. We took control of the line of scrimmage and that's where the yards came from. The momentum came and we just finished it off."

"It's flat out embarrassing," Cleveland linebacker Kevin Bentley said. "Not that history was made, just how we looked out there. It was embarrassing."

Lewis dominated from the start, turning the second play from scrimmage into the longest run in the eight-year history of the Ravens - beating his 75-yard run against the Browns last season.

"It set the tone," said Lewis, who added a 63-yard scoring run early in the fourth. "The line pushed down and the play was just totally textbook. I just had to turn on the burners and then go."

Lewis secured the record with seven minutes remaining, when he picked up three yards up the middle on 3rd-and-15, giving him 280. He received a standing ovation from the crowd and was mobbed by his teammates.

Matt Stover and Wade Richey kicked two field goals apiece and safety Ed Reed, who had two interceptions, returned one 54 yards for a touchdown to end the game as Baltimore bounced back from a season-opening loss.

Lewis' early touchdown highlighted a huge first quarter that saw him rush for 118 yards on just 10 carries. He started thinking about the record after rushing six times for 62 yards in the second, giving him 180 at halftime.

"I was going in for the half and Jonathan Ogden said 'Lets go get it, we can get 300 yards, lets go get the record,'" Lewis said. "I knew then, I got the confidence out of him and I knew that they were ready to go."

Lewis slowed in the third quarter, gaining just 15 yards on six attempts, putting his chance at the record in jeopardy. But he got back on track when he took the opening play of the fourth 63 yards to give the Ravens a 23-13 cushion.

Overall, the Ravens rushed for 343 yards against the struggling Browns defense.

"We didn't play well in any of the three phases for whatever reason," Cleveland coach Butch Davis said. "Not necessarily busted assignments. Just different culprits and different times and guys in the wrong gap. If someone is out of position, for whatever reason, you open yourself up for a potential long run."

The record-setting performance by Lewis overshadowed a dominant effort by the Baltimore defense and an injury to rookie quarterback Kyle Boller.

The Ravens had a 16-3 lead at halftime after holding the Browns to just one first down and 63 total yards.

"We kept shooting ourselves in the foot," said Cleveland quarterback Kelly Holcomb, who was 17-of-37 for 147 yards. "We couldn't get anything going. We just didn't make plays when we needed to. It was a tough day all around."

The first half was capped by Richey, who kicked a franchise-record 54-yard field goal with 66 seconds left.

Boller completed just 7-of-17 passes for 78 yards and an interception before injuring his left knee early in the third quarter.

"It would be nice to hit some throws, but when you have a running back running like that, it takes the pressure of you," he said. "You can make some mistakes and still win."

Boller was replaced by Chris Redman, who fumbled on his first play.

Cleveland recovered on the 22 and Holcomb connected with Kevin Johnson on the team's first touchdown of the season five plays later to make it 16-13.

Lewis restored Baltimore's 10-point advantage with his second touchdown run 47 seconds later.
