Oakland Raiders at San Diego Chargers

Recap | Boxscore

SAN DIEGO (Ticker) -- Marty Schottenhimer will be back as coach of the San Diego Chargers. Bill Callahan's future with the Oakland Raiders is much more uncertain.

Despite being tied with the Arizona Cardinals for the NFL's worst record, the Chargers announced Tuesday that Schottenheimer, who is 11-20 in two years, will remain as coach in 2004.

Callahan is in a different situation with the Raiders. One season after making the Super Bowl, the Raiders have endured a turbulent season, with players openly criticizing Callahan.

Following a game in November, Callahan brought further criticism to himself when he said his team had to be the "dumbest" team in America. Callahan is 15-16 in two seasons as coach.

The Chargers have lost five of their last six games, including last Sunday's 40-24 defeat Pittsburgh. LaDainian Tomlinson rushed for 91 yards and two touchdowns in the loss.

Tomlinson has been one of the few bright spots this season, rushing for 1,402 yards and 11 touchdowns. He also has 92 catches for 708 yards and four scores.

In the first meeting between the teams this season, Tomlinson rushed for 187 yards and a touchdown and also threw for a score, but the Chargers squandered a 14-point lead with under five minutes remaining in a 34-31 overtime loss.

The Raiders' disappointing season continued last Monday with a 41-7 loss to Green Bay. Oakland was atrocious defensively, allowing 548 total yards.

Oakland leads the series, 55-31-2.
