KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Priest Holmes will be looking to etch his name into the NFL record book Sunday when the Kansas City Chiefs host the Chicago Bears.
Holmes has rushed for 25 touchdowns, tying Emmitt Smith's single-season record. Smith accomplished the feat in 1995 for the Dallas Cowboys.
Now Holmes is just one touchdown shy of matching Marshall Faulk's total for the most in a season. Faulk reached the end zone 26 times for the St. Louis Rams in 2000.
Last season, Holmes amassed 24 total touchdowns. But his bid for history fell short when he missed the last two games with a hip injury.
Holmes may not play long in this contest. When New England beat Buffalo on Saturday, it clinched homefield advantage throughout the playoffs for the Patriots. Kansas City had a chance of gaining that if the Patriots lost on Saturday. However, the Chiefs still have a first-round bye.
Last Saturday, Holmes put himself in position for the record by rushing for three touchdowns in a 45-20 loss at Minnesota.
Kansas City continued to struggle defensively as it allowed 469 total yards against the Vikings. The Chiefs are just 3-3 following their 9-0 start and have allowed an average of 29.8 points in their last six contests.
The Bears could be playing their last game under coach Dick Jauron, whose job could be in jeopardy. In his fifth season, Jauron has posted a 35-44 record, including leading the Bears to the 2001 NFC Central Division title.
Jauron has built a case to save his job as the Bears have won four of their last five games. Included in that stretch is wins over playoff-bound Denver and Minnesota, which is tied for first-place in the NFC North Division.
Last Sunday, Anthony Thomas rushed for 141 yards and a touchdown an rookie Rex Grossman passed for two scores, leading the Bears to a 27-24 victory over Washington.
Chicago leads the series, 5-3.
