BLACKSBURG, Virginia (Ticker) -- No Kevin Jones, no problem.
Cedric Humes rushed for three touchdowns in place of the injured Jones as No. 9 Virgina Tech rolled to a 43-0 rout of Division I-AA James Madison.
The Hokies' star running back, Jones suffered injuries to both wrists when he was shoved out of bounds by defensive end Demetrius Shambley early in the second quarter. X-rays were negative and Jones was cleared to return, although he remained on the sidelines.
"He had both wrists X-rayed," Hokies coach Frank Beamer said. "They were negative but his wrists are tender. I think he'll be OK but that was a scary moment."
Humes had little trouble picking up the slack against the overmatched Dukes (1-1). He scored on a one-yard run in the second quarter to give the Hokies (2-0) a 20-0 lead before adding TD runs of one and 11 yards in the third.
Hokies quarterback Bryan Randall completed 13-of-20 passes for 153 yards and added 55 yards rushing and a TD.
Virginia Tech played without backup quarterback Marcus Vick and starting linebacker Brandon Manning, who both were suspended one game for "violation of team policies."
The Hokies dominated the entire contest, holding a 487-143 advantage in first downs and garneing a 25-8 edge in first downs.
"Frank (Beamer) was more gracious," James Madison coach Mickey Matthews said of his Virginia Tech counterpart. "The last quarter and a half it was second and third teamers playing against each other. They were ready for the game to be over and so were we."
After the Dukes with three-and-out on their first possession, the Hokies broke on top by moving 71 yards in eight plays. Randall capped the drive with a 47-yard touchdown run down the left sideline.
Carter Warley booted field goals of 43 and 23 yards in the opening 6:58 of the second quarter, extending the lead to 13-0.
Humes capped a nine-play, 73-yard drive with an 11-yard TD run with 1:49 left in the half for a 20-0 advantage.
"When he runs with his shoulder pads towards the goal line he is very good," Beamer said. "He needs to hold onto the ball. As far as a tough guy that runs hard, he's a bruiser, he's got the package."
On their second drive of the second quarter, the Hokies went 90 yards in 12 plays. Humes also capped that march with a a one-yard TD run.
Humes, who carried 15 times for 75 yards, extended the lead to 33-0 with a 10-yard TD run with 6:57 remaining in the third quarter.
Dukes quarterback Matt LeZotte completed 6-of-11 passes for 68 yards and one interception.
