Toledo Rockets down to UNLV Rebels 18-28 Friday, Aug. 29, 2003 Boxscore LAS VEGAS (Ticker) -- Kurt Nantkes threw a pair of touchdown passes to Greg Estandia in a 27-second span late in the fourth quarter as Nevada-Las Vegas rallied for a 28-18 victory over Toledo in the season opener for both schools. Nantkes put the Rebels ahead, 21-18, with a 12-yard strike to Estandia with 5:52 remaining. Two plays later, Toledo's Terrance Hudson fumbled following a 15-yard reception and linebacker John Andrews recovered for UNLV at the Rockets' 22-yard line. Nantkes and Estandia hooked up again on the next play to make it 28-18. Replacing three-year starter Greg Van Ness, Nantkes completed 27-of-41 passes for 308 yards and three TDs. He also threw a three-yard scoring toss to Andrew Faga that gave the Rebels a 14-6 lead with 12:37 left in the second quarter. Larry Groom paced UNLV on the ground with 97 yards on 22 carries. Toledo's Bruce Gradkowski, who was 14-of-27 for 124 yards and two scores, connected with Andrew Clarke for a six-yard TD with 3:43 left in the half that pulled the Rockets within 14-12 at intermission. Toledo took an 18-14 lead when Paul Dye returned a fumble 80 yards for a TD just 4 1/2 minutes into the third quarter. The Rockets opened the scoring less than three minutes into the contest on Gradkowski's 12-yard pass to Andrew Clarke. Jason Robbins' kick failed, one of three conversions missed by Toldeo. Just under 6 1/2 minutes later, UNLV grabbed the lead when Leon Moore returned a fumble 25 yards for a touchdown.
