Syracuse Orangemen down to Rutgers Scarlet Knights 7-24 Saturday, Nov. 29, 2003 Boxscore PISCATAWAY, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Fullback Brian Leonard rushed for 138 yards and a touchdown as Rutgers completed its best season since 1998 with a 24-7 Big East Conference victory over Syracuse. Ryan Hart threw for one TD and ran for another, helping the Scarlet Knights (5-7, 2-5) to their highest win total in five years. They also went 3-3 at home and posted multiple wins in the Big East for the first time since 1998. Syracuse (5-6, 2-5) failed to qualify for a bowl game, suffering its third straight setback. The Orangemen opened the scoring on Steve Gregory's five-yard return of a blocked punt just 1:54 into the first quarter, but they failed to score again, totaling only 198 yards of offense while committing two of the game's three turnovers. Rutgers got even with 19 seconds left in the first half, when Hart threw a 19-yard strike to Tres Moses. Eddie Grimes then picked off Orangemen quarterback R.J. Anderson and returned the ball 51 yards to Syracuse's 3. Three plays later, Hart scrambled for the score and a 14-7 lead. The Scarlet Knights then shocked Syracuse with an on-side kick, recovering at the Orangemen's 33. Leonard dominated the four-play drive, rushing for gains of 17, 19 and two yards to make it 21-7. Ryan Sands added a 23-yard field goal for the Knights, who avenged last season's 45-14 loss in the Carrier Dome and improved to 6-27-1 in the all-time series. Anderson completed 14-of-32 passes for 161 yards as Syracuse failed to earn a bowl bid for the second straight season.
