TEMPE, Arizona (Ticker) -- Andrew Walter threw three touchdown passes, including an 80-yard strike to Derek Hagan early in the fourth quarter, as Arizona State closed out a disappointing season with a 28-7 Pac-10 Conference victory over Arizona.
Walter went over the 3,000-yard mark in passing this year, completing 16-of-26 passes for 281 yards. Hagan finished with eight catches for 155 yards to become the sixth Arizona State receiver with 1,000 yards in a season.
The win snapped a four-game losing streak for the Sun Devils (5-7, 2-6), whose only other Pac-10 victory this year came against Arizona.
After the teams traded touchdowns in the first quarter, the Sun Devils took the lead for good on Walter's nine-yard TD pass to Jammal Lewis with 3:10 left in the first half. Loren Wade scored on a 40-yard run with 1:34 remaining in the second quarter to give Arizona State a 21-7 lead. Hagan's long TD reception made it 28-7 with 1:58 remaining.
Arizona (2-10, 1-7) lost 10 of its last 11 games, the only win being a 27-22 victory over Washington on November 8. Interim coach Mike Hankwitz went 1-6 after taking over for John Mackovic, who was fired after a 13-10 overtime loss to Texas Christian on September 27.
Arizona State wore down Arizona with a balanced attack, passing for 281 yards and rushing for 203 yards. Wade paced the Sun Devils on the ground with 120 yards on 18 carries.
Kris Keavner completed 21-of-32 passes for 252 yards with a touchdown and interception for the Wildcats. Mike Jefferson caught nine passes for 115 yards for Arizona, including a 16-yard TD reception.
