STARKVILLE, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Eli Manning made sure Jackie Sherrill's final game was not a fun experience for the retiring Mississippi State coach.

Manning completed 19-of-27 passes for 260 yards and three touchdowns as No. 19 Mississippi captured the "Egg Bowl" with a 31-0 rout of the lowly Bulldogs in the 100th meeting between the schools.

It was the first time the Rebels blanked the Bulldogs since a 48-0 triumph here in 1971. Mississippi leads the all-time series, 57-37-6, and is 51-20-5 since they started playing the "Battle of the Golden Egg" in 1927.

Chris Collins had eight catches for 113 yards and a touchdown for the Rebels (9-3, 7-1), who overcame a downpour to capture at least a share of its first Southeastern Conference Western Division title.

Mississippi only can advance to the SEC title game if Louisiana State loses to Arkansas on Friday. The Tigers beat the Rebels last week, 17-14.

"We are 7-1 now," Rebels coach David Cutcliffe said. "There are not many teams like that. It's not easy to come by in the SEC. We have not done this in a long time. This gives us some share of the title. I'm proud of the staff for getting the team ready, and the team for getting it done."

The Rebels took a 7-0 lead on a 25-yard touchdown pass from Manning to Tremaine Turner with 3:28 left in the second quarter, and after the Bulldogs failed to score off a pair of turnovers, opened up a 14-0 edge on an 11-yard toss from Manning to tight end Lawrence Lilly.

"We were trying to hit (receiver Bill Flowers), but they played a different coverage than we thought they were going to," Manning said. "Tremaine's never caught the ball on that play before, but I saw him get open behind their corner and he made a great catch."

After linebacker Rob Robertson intercepted Kevin Fant on the Bulldogs' ensuing possession, Jonathan Nicholas connected on a 32-yard field goal and Brandon Jacobs made it 24-0 on a one-yard run with 15 seconds left in the half.

Sherrill finished his career 180-120-4 after stops at Pittsburgh, Texas A&M and Mississippi State. The Bulldogs (2-10, 1-7) went just 8-27 in their last three seasons and experienced their first 10-loss season since 1988.

Mississippi State was shut out in its final two home games. Alabama posted a 38-0 triumph here on November 8.

"Thanks to all the Bulldog family for giving me an opportunity to be here for 13 years," Sherrill said. "I'm sorry we could not have finished the way we should have. I have no regrets. Support these young players next season."

"It was frustrating because we wanted to win for him, and we wanted to win for ourselves, as well," Bulldogs linebacker T.J. Mawhinney said. "It doesn't go that way all the time. You learn from it, and you keep going."

Collins produced the only points of the second half when he caught a 23-yard pass from Manning with 1:39 left in the third quarter.

"His brother has worked with him a lot," Sherrill said of Manning. "At this stage, Eli is much farther along than Peyton. There is not another quarterback in the nation as good as him."

Making his final college start, Fant went 14-of-28 for 91 yards and one interception. He was sacked three times.

"The weather is tough for any team," Fant said. "Their defense just really played. I think they just came in to play us really energized."

The Rebels outgained the Bulldogs, 359-192.
