BLOOMINGTON, Indiana (Ticker) -- Kyle Orton threw a pair of touchdown passes as 16th-ranked Purdue opened an 18-point lead and held on for a 24-16 Big Ten Conference victory over Indiana to keep the "Old Oaken Bucket."

John Standeford had both touchdown catches, including a 33-yard score that gave the Boilermakers a 21-3 lead 5:14 into the third quarter.

Purdue (9-3, 6-2 Big Ten) has won seven of the last eight meetings with its intrastate foes. The Boilermakers are tied with Ohio State for second place in the Big Ten, but lost to the Buckeyes in overtime last week.

"We feel fortunate to come out of here with a win," Purdue coach Joe Tiller said. "We felt like Indiana played really inspired football and our hats go off to them. I actually thought they played better than we did today at times."

Orton completed 11-of-20 passes for 222 yards and a pair of interceptions as the Boilermakers secured their third nine-win season in seven years. Standeford had six catches for 151 yards and Jerod Void rushed 31 times for 141 yards.

Bryan Robertson kicked two field goals in the second half for Indiana (2-10, 1-7), which finished one game ahead of last-place Illinois.

Robertson kicked a 22-yard field goal to pull the Hoosiers within, 21-16, just 4:38 into the fourth quarter.

Indiana had a chance to take the lead after safety Herana-Daze Jones intercepted Orton at the Purdue 44. The Hoosiers drove to the Purdue 20, but on 3rd-and-5, Landon Johnson intercepted Matt LoVecchio.

Purdue did capitalize on the turnover as Orton hooked up with Standeford for a 56-yard reception to set up Ben Jones' 22-yard field goal for the final margin with 5:25 remaining.

LoVecchio was 12-of-26 for 115 yards, marking the seventh time in eight games Indiana failed to pass for 200 yards.

Freshman BenJarvus Green-Ellis, one of the few bright spots in a dismal season for Indiana, ran for 141 yards and a touchdown on 31 carries. Green-Ellis had a career-high 203 yards in last week's loss to Penn State.

"There was a lot of talking going on between both teams today," Green-Ellis said. "That's just what football players do. There wasn't any bad talk going on, rather just the normal trash players talk week-in, week-out."
