Duke Blue Devils down to Clemson Tigers 7-40

CLEMSON, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Charlie Whitehurst threw three touchdown passes as Clemson routed Atlantic Coast Conference foe Duke, 40-7.

Whitehurst completed 27-of-40 passes for 331 yards with two interceptions for the Tigers (7-4, 5-3), who took a 34-0 lead into the fourth quarter.

Clemson opened the scoring on a 31-yard pass from Whitehurst to Derrick Hamilton with 5:57 left in the first quarter. Senterrio Landrum fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the Duke 25, and Whitehurst connected with Hamilton on the next play to make it 14-0.

Hamilton grabbed six passes for 133 yards for Clemson, which had alternated losses and wins over its previous six games.

Chris Dapolito went 5-of-11 for just 54 yards and an interception for Duke (3-8, 1-6), which snapped a 30-game ACC losing streak last week with a 41-17 triumph over Georgia Tech.

The Blue Devils were outgained, 486-174, as they lost their fifth in a row to the Tigers.
