PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- On a chilly afternoon at Lincoln Financial Field, Temple made Virginia Tech sweat.

Bryan Randall scored on a 23-yard run in overtime as the 12th-ranked Hokies squandered a 17-point lead in the fourth quarter before taking advantage of a missed extra point to escape with a 24-23 victory.

Randall's score on the second play of overtime gave the Hokies a 24-17 advantage before Temple's Walt Washington threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to Zami Cobb. But Jared Davis, who forced overtime with a 37-yard field goal with 40 seconds left in the fourth quarter, was wide left on the extra point.

"First of all, his field goal kept us in the game," Temple coach Bobby Wallace said. "Without the field goal he kicked in the fourth quarter we don't get to overtime."

The Hokies (8-2, 4-2 Big East) had won the last four meetings with Temple by a combined score of 152-30, but needed every one of their points on Saturday.

"It's good to win a close football game," Hokies coach Frank Beamer said. "We had good pressure on the kick but I want to give Temple credit. They didn't play like a team that won one ballgame."

Virginia Tech's Kevin Jones, a native of nearby Chester, Pennsylvania, carried 28 times for 150 yards and a touchdown.

"I just wanted to put on show for them," Jones said of playing before family and friends. "I was just happy that everybody showed up."

Temple (1-9, 0-5) lost its fifth straight game and has dropped all three of its overtime games this season. It also lost to Villanova and Cincinnati.

The Hokies were knocked out of the national title chase with last week's loss to Pittsburgh, but they appeared to be coasting to a victory on Saturday when Randall threw a 28-yard touchdown to Ernest Wilford 37 seconds into the fourth quarter to make it 17-0.

The Owls did not quit, cutting Virginia Tech's lead to 10 points on a 13-yard touchdown pass from Washington to Umar Ferguson. Washington later followed with a 34-yard run, setting up a one-yard TD run by Ferguson that made it 17-14. Davis then tied it with his 37-yard field goal.

Temple had a chance to win the game on the final play of regulation after Randall was intercepted, but Davis missed a 50-yard field goal attempt.

The only score of the first half was a 26-yard field goal by Virginia Tech's Carter Wiley that was set up by a 47-yard run by Kevin Jones. Jones had a nine-yard TD run in the third quarter to increase the lead to 10-0.

Washington carried 26 times for 151 yards. He completed just 15-of-30 passes for 156 yards and was sacked five times.

"I think they found a quarterback," Beamer said.

Virginia Tech improved to just 7-8 in regular-season games in November and December since 2000. The game-time temperature was 51 degrees with winds of 15 miles-per-hour.
