COLLEGE PARK, Maryland (Ticker) -- Josh Allen's running warmed a chilled crowd at Byrd Stadium.

With the wind chill in the upper teens, Allen rushed for 254 yards - the third-highest total in school history - and two touchdowns as Maryland defeated Virginia, 27-17, to keep alive its Atlantic Coast Conference title hopes.

Starting in place of the injured Bruce Perry, Allen scored on runs of one and 80 yards in the first half as the Terrapins opened a 24-7 lead at the intermission.

Maryland (7-3, 4-2) held off Virginia's comeback attempt in the second half to win for the seventh time in eight games following an 0-2 start.

Virginia closed to 24-17 on Matt Schaub's 14-yard TD pass to Alvin Perman and Connor Hughes' 43-yard field goal with 9:15 left in the fourth quarter. But Maryland sealed the win on a 45-yard field goal by Nick Novak with 3:42 remaining.

Scott McBrien, playing with a sore groin, completed 14-of-21 passes for 191 yards, including an 11-yard TD strike to Latrez Harrison that gave the Terrapins a 7-0 lead with 8:24 left in the opening quarter.

Schaub was 13-of-26 for 186 yards for the Cavaliers (5-5, 3-4), who must win one of their last two games to become bowl-eligible.

Maryland, which defeated Virginia for just the second time in the last 12 meetings, needs North Carolina State to defeat Florida State on Saturday to stay in the ACC race.
