BLOOMINGTON, Indiana (Ticker) -- Indiana escaped the Big Ten Conference basement with a 17-14 victory over Illinois as quarterback Matt LoVecchio scored on an eight-yard run with 24 seconds remaining.

LoVecchio's touchdown capped a 12-play, 66-yard drive that he kept alive with a two-yard keeper on 4th-and-1 at his own 43-yard line.

Illinois (1-10, 0-7 Big Ten) got back the ball at its own 20, but Dustin Ward was intercepted by safety Herana-Daze Jones at the Indiana 12 as time expired.

The Hoosiers (2-8, 1-5) snapped a six-game losing streak and an 11-game Big Ten skid while handing Illinois its ninth consecutive defeat. The Fighting Illini and Penn State are the only Big Ten teams without a conference win.

Ward threw a pair of touchdown passes, including a 34-yarder to Ade Adeyemo late in the third quarter that gave Illinois a 14-7 lead. He completed 15-of-21 passes for 163 yards with an interception.

Indiana climbed within four points midway through the final period on a 40-yard field goal by Bryan Robertson.

LoVecchio was 17-of-24 for 161 yards and freshman BenJarvus Green-Ellis rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown on 25 carries.

Freshman Marcus Mason carried 23 times for a career-best 102 yards for Illinois, which had won the previous three meetings but still leads the all-time series, 40-18-3.
