East Carolina Pirates down to Memphis Tigers 24-41

MEMPHIS, Tennessee (Ticker) -- DeAngelo Williams did not let up.

One week after going over the 1,000-yard mark, Williams rushed for 137 yards and a touchdown on 29 carries as Memphis became bowl eligible with a 41-24 Conference USA victory over East Carolina.

In last week's 41-9 victory at Tulane, Williams became just the third running back in school history to rush for more than 1,000 yards in a season. He ran for a career-high 195 yards.

The Tigers (6-3, 3-2) appeared to suffer a letdown, falling behind East Carolina, 14-3, just seven minutes into the first quarter. Damarcus Fox returned a kickoff 94 yards for a touchdown and Marvin Townes scored on a 15-yard run to give the Pirates their early lead.

Williams ignited the Tigers with a four-yard TD run wiuth 4:42 remaining in the first period before Memphis grabbed a 17-14 lead on Danny Wimprine's 29-yard TD strike to Maurice Avery with 8:11 left in the half.

East Carolina (1-8, 1-4) tied it on Cam Broadwell's 34-yard field goal with 1:22 left in the first half, but Memphis took control in the third quarter as Wimprine threw TD passes of 32 and 27 yards to Darron White.

Wimprine completed 17-of-31 passes for 268 yards and four touchdowns for the Tigers, who have won three in a row. Memphis finished with a 509-223 edge in total offense.

James Pinkney completed just 9-of-16 passes for 109 yards for East Carolina. Townes paced the Pirates on the ground with 62 yards on 20 carries.
