IOWA CITY, Iowa (Ticker) -- No. 14 Iowa tuned up for a key Big Ten Conference matchup with a convincing 41-10 romp over last-place Illinois.

Fred Russell ran for 91 yards and Nathan Chandler completed passes to eight different receivers for 246 yards as Iowa (7-2, 3-2) handed Illinois (1-9, 0-6) an eighth straight defeat.

Russell carried 14 times and has 1,007 yards, joining Sedrick Shaw (1994-96) and Ladell Betts (2000-01) as the only Hawkeyes to rush for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons. Russell gave the Hawkeyes a 17-0 lead with a two-yard run 52 seconds before halftime.

Chandler completed 16-of-23 passes and rested most of the fourth quarter for Iowa, which visits 17th-ranked Purdue next week. Chandler capped an 18-play, 77-yard drive with a one-yard pass to Tony Jackson for a 7-0 lead with 5:54 to go in the first quarter. It was the only score of the first quarter, when Iowa held the ball for 10:34.

"I was pleased with the way we played today," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "We did a lot of good things today. Hopefully we can keep building forward. Nathan played a real nice game. Illinois had a lot of blitzes and he handled them well. Nathan played a real smart, nice game."

Illinois was outgained, 505-265, and lost two of four fumbles, including one by quarterback Dustin Ward that safety Bob Sanders returned two yards for a touchdown to make it 27-0 with 5:56 left in the third quarter.

Ward was just 12-of-23 for 108 yards and was sacked twice.

"I thought Dustin has to do a better job of staying the pocket," Illinois coach Ron Turner said. "I thought early we were competing and battling. When we had a chance to make a play, though, we just didn't get it done."

The Hawkeyes scored on their following possession with Chandler's 46-yard pass to Calvin Davis setting up a 14-yard run by Russell to push the lead to 34-0 with 2:48 remaining in the third. Russell entered the game with just three touchdowns after running for nine scores last season.

Backup quarterback Chris Pazan got Illinois on the scoreboard with a three-yard pass to Mark Kornfeld 2:38 into the fourth quarter. John Gockman kicked a 24-yard field goal to cut the deficit to 34-10 with 7:58 left.

Iowa's backup, freshman Drew Tate, hooked up with Matt Melloy for a 13-yard TD pass with 3:12 left.

Nate Kaeding kicked a pair of field goals for Iowa, giving him 322 career points.
