Maryland Terrapins lose to Ga. Tech Yellow Jackets 3-7 Thursday, Oct. 23, 2003 Boxscore ATLANTA (Ticker) -- Reggie Ball threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Jonathan Smith early in the fourth quarter as Georgia Tech snapped Maryland's five-game winning streak with a 7-3 Atlantic Coast Conference victory. Maryland (5-3, 2-2 ACC) suffered its first loss since a 35-10 defeat at Florida State on September 6. The Terrapins fell to 1-3 on the road. Georgia Tech (5-3, 3-2) won its fourth straight and moved into a second-place tie with Virginia in the conference standings. Maryland fell into a four-way tie for fourth place. After a scoreless first half, the Terrapins took a 3-0 lead on Nick Novak's 35-yard field goal with 3:14 remaining in the third quarter. It capped a 12-play, 62-yard drive led by freshman quarterback Joel Statham. Statham was in the game because starter Scott McBrien was forced out after taking a series of hard hits in the first half. Statham was 4-of-11 for 47 yards. But a costly mistake by Statham turned the game around when his fumble was recovered by defensive back Jonathan Cox, who returned it to the 17-yard-line. Five players later, Ball hit Smith for the winning points. The Terrapins had three possessions in the fourth quarter, but their first drive stalled at the Yellow Jackets' 39-yard-line. Statham was intercepted on the next possession and threw three incompletions to end the game. Defensive end Eric Henderson had two of Georgia Tech's three sacks. The Terrapins fumbled twice and intercepted McBrien and Statham once.
