OXFORD, Mississippi (Ticker) -- Mississippi's Eli Manning continued the family tradition of strong performances against Alabama.

Manning threw for 230 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another score, leading Mississippi to a 43-28 victory over Alabama in a Southeastern Conference contest.

Manning's 14-of-22 effort helped Mississippi (4-2) secure its first 3-0 start in the SEC since 1970, when Archie - Eli's father - was a senior quarterback at Ole Miss.

The Rebels improved their on-field record against Alabama to just 8-41-2. Ole Miss received a forfeit win over Alabama in 1993. But four of Mississippi's on-field wins over Alabama have come with a Manning at quarterback and the family, including Peyton Manning while at Tennessee, is 7-3 as starters against the Crimson Tide.

Brodie Croyle threw for 248 yards, including two TDs in the final five minutes, for slumping Alabama (3-5, 1-3), which was playing its first road game of the season and lost for the fourth time in its last five overall.

Tremaine Turner gained 81 yards on 17 carries and Ronald McClendon added 79 on 12 as the Rebels collected 216 yards on the ground.

Ole Miss jumped out to a 24-0 lead after the first quarter against a team that had not allowed a touchdown in its previous six periods. Jonathan Nicols kicked a 51-yard field goal and Manning found Taye Biddle for a pair of TDs.

Shaud Williams got Alabama on the board in the second quarter with a 3-yard run and Brian Bostick added a 32 field goal. But Manning connected with Kerry Johnson for a 41-yard strike to push Mississippi's lead to 31-10 with 1:39 left in the half.

Manning ran for a three-yard score early in the third before Alabama's Chris James returned a blocked punt 32 yards four minutes later.

After Nicolas kicked a 19-yard field goal at the start of the fourth for a 41-16 lead, Croyle tossed a 22-yeard TD pass to Ray Hudson and five-yard scoring toss to pull the Crimson Tide within 41-28. But the Rebels capped the scoring with a safety with 1:19 left.

Mississippi's defense forced three turnovers and held Alabama to 116 yards rushing.
