MIAMI (Ticker) -- A little trickery helped send Miami on the way to another lopsided victory over Big East Conference foe Temple.

D.J. Williams had a 61-yard touchdown run out of punt formation and Jarrett Payton and freshman Tyrone Moss each ran for over 100 yards as the second-ranked Hurricanes pulled away for their 12th straight victory over the Owls, 52-14.

Temple (1-6, 0-2 Big East) recorded its only win this season over Division I-AA Middle Tennessee State, but was within 10 points of the Hurricanes early in the third quarter.

After Temple's defense held, Miami lined up to punt, and Williams, an up-man in the formation, took the snap from center and raced up the middle for a touchdown to give Miami a 31-14 lead.

"Once I got the ball and got into the open, I saw that there was no one between me and the return guy and I knew I had to score," Williams said. "Coach (Larry Coker) said that if we ever run a fake, that I had to score. I guess I still have the moves."

Brock Berlin followed later in the quarter with a three-yard touchdown pass to Kevin Everett and Jason Geathers added a two-yard TD run to make it 45-14 after three quarters.

With the big lead, Coker was able to substitute freely.

"We played a lot of young guys today and I was pleased they did a nice job," Coker said.

Miami (7-0, 2-0), which defeated Florida State last Saturday, will have a week off before facing third-ranked and unbeaten Virginia Tech on November 1.

Payton carried 16 times for 115 yards, including touchdown runs of eight and 14 yards in the first quarter.

"Every week I feel like I'm getting better," said Payton, who started his second straight game in place of the injured Frank Gore, who is out for the season. "I've been working really hard to get to this point and I think it's paying off."

Moss carried 15 times for 135 yards and had a nine-yard TD run in the fourth quarter.

Miami won its 39th straight regular season game and its 26th straight home game and extended its Big East Conference winning streak to 27 contests. The Hurricanes have scored no less than 36 points in any of their 12 straight victories over Temple and have outscored the Owls, 544-133, in that span.

"Everytime we come here, we run out of defensive players," Temple coach Bobby Wallace said. "They're physical and it's hot and we just keep losing players."

Berlin completed 16-of-26 passes for 187 yards and was not intercepted. He also threw a 15-yard TD pass to Geathers in the second quarter.

"Our offense is coming together and this is a very good steppingstone going into Virginia Tech," Berlin said.

Jamil Porter of Temple carried six times for 84 yards and two scores. He opened the scoring with a two-yard run in the first quarter and exploded for a 69-yard TD run in the second quarter.

Temple's Mike McCann completed 5-of-11 passes for 21 yards.
