AMES, Iowa (Ticker) -- No. 19 Iowa ended five years of frustration against Iowa State as Maurice Brown and Fred Russell scored touchdowns in a 40-21 rout of the Cyclones.

The Hawkeyes (3-0) snapped a five-game losing streak to Iowa State - their longest in the series - and avenged their only loss of last season.

Iowa went on to tie Ohio State for the Big Ten Conference title and win a school-record 11 games before losing to Southern California in the Orange Bowl.

Iowa increased its lead in the all-time series to 34-17. Prior to Iowa State's five-game winning streak, the Hawkeyes had won 15 in a row against the Cyclones.

"We are extremely pleased," Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz said. "We played extremely hard all game long. It was a great day for us. Our guys really believe in special teams. Our special teams are forcing turnovers."

The Hawkeyes were in control throughout in this one, building a 20-7 halftime lead.

Iowa only managed 10 first downs and gave up 319 passing yards, but5most of it was after the contest was out of reach. The Hawkeyes sacked Iowa State's Austin Flynn three times and cashed two turnovers into 14 points.

"Right now, as a defensive line, we have a lot of confidence that we can get to the quarterback in every game," Iowa defensive end Matt Roth said. "If we can keep that up for the season, I believe that we can have a solid season."

Nathan Chandler tossed a 17-yard TD pass to Brown in the first quarter and Russell scored on a three-yard-run early in the second period. Nate Kaeding also kicked two of his four field goals in the first half.

Iowa scored just 41 seconds into the second half as safety Chris Smith recovered a punt blocked by Sean Considine in the end zone to make it 27-7.

"Iowa was more physical than us today," Iowa State coach Dan McCarney said. "They had more plays and are an excellent football team."

Kaeding converted field goals of 19 and 20 yards to make it 33-7 late in the third quarter.

"In terms of records, records and awards don't compare to the feeling of this win," said Kaeding, who had been 0-3 against Iowa State. "It's cool to think my name will be up there with some of the great kickers that Iowa has had in the past."

Marcus Schnoor's 33-yard TD run gave Iowa a 40-14 cushion in the final period.

"We struggled all day against their defense and special teams," Flynn said. "I just think the turnovers killed us today."

Flynn and Chris Love each threw touchdown passes in the fourth quarter for Iowa State (2-1). Flynn completed 24-of-41 passes for 239 yards.

"I thought Flynn was having a hot and cold day," McCarney said. "We had certain ideas of plays we wanted and we didn't get those results."

Russell paced Iowa on the ground with 75 yards on 12 carries. Chandler completed only 7-of-15 passes for 72 yards.
