AUSTIN, Texas (Ticker) -- Texas coach Mack Brown may regret putting Arkansas back on the schedule.

Scoring touchdowns on four of its five trips inside the red zone, the Razorbacks upset the fifth-ranked Longhorns, 38-28, in the first regular-season meeting between the former Southwest Conference rivals since 1991.

Arkansas snapped Texas' 20-game home winning streak and extended its winning streak against non-conference opponents to 18 games.

"It was an unbelievable game today and there were a lot of heroes on the field," Arkansas coach Houston Nutt said. "Throughout the entire game, every player gave their all and I loved both our heart and our character."

The Razorbacks (2-0) enjoyed a huge advantage on the ground, outrushing the Longhorns, 265-62, and quarterback Matt Jones delivered the knockout punch with a 60-yard bootleg on 3rd-and-1 from the Razorbacks 39.

"A lot of our players are from Texas, so we knew the importance of this rivalry and knew it was going to be a tough game," Jones said.

Jones, who rushed for 102 yards on just 12 carries, was pushed out of bounds inside the 1. The Razorbacks could not get into the end zone but David Carlton's 19-yard field goal gave them a 38-28 lead with 5:08 remaining.

Texas' hopes ended when Chance Mock's pass on 4th-and-3 inside the Razorbacks 40 was incomplete with 3:46 to go.

"You can't give up 200 yards on the ground," Brown said. "We gave up long runs and our offense was trying to play catch-up all day."

Roy Williams caught 10 passes for 117 yards to become Texas' all-time leader in career receptions while Mock completed 21-of-40 passes for 264 yards and three touchdowns. But the Longhorns could get nothing going on the ground as Cedric Benson was held to just 27 yards on 13 carries.

"We will put this game behind us and rebuild," Williams said. "This team has worked too hard to let everything go downhill because of one game."

Brown agreed to a home-and-home series with the Razorbacks as a way to recognize the accomplishments of former Texas and Arkansas coaches Darrel Royal and Frank Broyles, who each won national championships at their respective schools.

But the rivalry always has meant more to the Razorbacks and they played like it, building 14-point leads on three different occasions.

"They answered everything we did," Brown said. "It's what good teams do."

Arkansas has won three straight in the series to cut Texas' lead to 54-21. The Razorbacks posted a 27-6 victory in the 2000 Orange Bowl and a 14-13 win in the last regular season meeting.

In this one, Arkansas converted three turnovers into 14 points. One play after Tony Jeffery fumbled, Cedric Cobbs rambled 46 yards to make it 28-14 with 11:45 left in the third quarter.

"The offensive line was continuously pushing people back and the defensive line should get the MVP for the game," Nutt said. "UT had three turnovers at crucial times that helped us win the game."

"They have a great offense, especially with Roy Williams and Cedric Benson," said Cobbs, who ran for 115 yards on 20 carries. "I think our heart was just a little bit bigger than theirs because they were just as capable of beating us today."

Dakari Pearson appeared to give the Longhorns a spark by returning a fumble 77 yards for a touchdown on the first play of the fourth quarter.

But Cedric Washington returned the ensuing kickoff to the Texas 36, setting up De'Arrius Howard's one-yard TD plunge that made it 35-21 with 10:09 left.

"The kickoff by Cedric Washington was probably the play of the game in that it changed the momentum," Jones said.

Texas needed less than a minute to again close within a touchdown on Mock's nine-yard TD strike to B.J. Johnson with 9:38 remaining.

Jones completed 8-of-16 passes for 139 yards and a touchdown as the Razorbacks surprised the Longhorns early with their ability to throw the ball.

After Texas opened the scoring on Mock's 31-yard TD pass to Johnson, Jones sparked the Razorbacks. He tossed an 18-yard TD strike to George Wilson and scored on a three-yard to make it 14-7 after the first quarter.

Arkansas extended its lead to 21-7 on Howard's two-yard with 1:57 left in the first half, but Mock directed the two-minute offense to perfection, tossed a nine-yard TD toss to Johnson with 35 seconds left that pulled the Longhorns within 21-14 at the intermission.
