SALT LAKE CITY (Ticker) -- Brandon Warfield's third touchdown of the game, a 14-yard run with 66 seconds left, gave Utah a 31-24 victory over California, its first over the Pac-10 Conference school in nearly 40 years.

Warfield carried 30 times for 94 yards as the Utes (2-1) earned their first win over the Golden Bears (1-3) since 1964. The senior running back's three touchdowns gave him seven for the season.

Utah led 21-7 at halftime after a one-yard touchdown run by quarterback Alex Smith just before the intermission. But California came back with 17 straight points in the third quarter, taking a 24-21 advantage.

Smith ran 12 times for 71 yards and completed 18-for-27 passes for 136 yards without an interception.

After Bryan Borreson tied it with a 35-yard field goal with 9:01 left, the Bears looked ready to respond. But Tyler Fredrickson missed a 54-yarder wide left that would have given California the lead with 6:01 to play.

California's Geoff McArthur caught eight passes for 130 yards and two scores.
