Southern Miss Golden Eagles over Ala.-Birmingham Blazers 17-12 Thursday, Sep. 4, 2003 Boxscore BIRMINGHAM, Alabama (Ticker) -- Micky D'Angelo completed 14-of-20 passes for 197 yards and a touchdown as Southern Mississippi defeated UAB, 17-12, in the Conference USA opener for both teams. D'Angelo's 28-yard TD pass to Terrell Browden gave Southern Miss (1-1, 1-0 C-USA) a 14-3 lead with 5:59 left in the first half. The Golden Eagles grabbed a 7-3 lead on Marcus Anderson's two-yard TD run 4 1/2 minutes earlier. Linebacker Rod Davis set up Browden's score by recovering Bo Moncur's fumble at the UAB 27. D'Angelo and Browden connected on the next play. Tim Blackwell rushed for 88 yards on 20 carries for Southern Miss, which rebounded from a 34-2 season-opening loss to California. Darrell Hackney, playing with a sprained left knee, completed 23-of-37 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown for UAB (1-1, 0-1). Hackney's eight-yard TD strike to Bradly Chavez pulled the Blazers within 17-12 with 5:58 left in the contest. UAB, which opened with a 24-19 win over Baylor last week, was victimized by four turnovers. The Blazers had a final chance, taking over at their 20 with a minute remaining. But on the first play of the possession, Juhn Cook fumbled after a 15-yard completion. Defensive back Eric Pruitt recovered for the Golden Eagles. Moncur paced UAB on the ground with 78 yards on 12 carries. Roddy White caught 10 passes for 111 yards for the Blazers. Southern Mississippi has won all four meetings between the teams.
