ST. LOUIS (Ticker) -- Brad Smith tossed a six-yard touchdown pass to Darius Outlaw with 4:12 remaining as Missouri rallied for a 22-15 victory over Illinois in the season opener for both teams.

Smith, who last year became just the second quarterback in NCAA history to pass for 2,000 yards and run for 1,000 in the same season as a freshman, was contained for most of this one, completing just 12-of-18 passes for 102 yards.

But he did throw two touchdowns and found Outlaw to cap a 13-play, 78-yard drive that took more than six minutes off the clock. Smith, who ran for 66 yards on 17 carries, rushed for the two-point conversion to make it 22-15.

Illinois reached Missouri's 23 on the ensuing possession, but its hopes ended when Jon Beutjer's pass on 4th-and-4 was incomplete with just eight seconds left in the contest.

After being held to three field goals by John Gockman in the first three quarters, Illinois took a 15-14 lead on Beutjer's six-yard TD pass to Kelvin Hayden with 10:36 to go in the fourth period. Beutjer completed 31-of-44 passes for 284 yards.

Missouri built a 14-6 halftime lead on Zack Abron's one-yard TD run with 50 seconds left in the first quarter and Smith's 14-yard TD pass to D.J. McCoy with 5:31 left in the second period.

J.B. Halsey paced Illinois on the ground with 139 yards on 20 carries.

Missouri increased its lead in the all-time series to 13-7 and has won three of four meetings in St. Louis. The Tigers also beat the Fighting Illini last season, 33-20.
