PROVO, Utah (Ticker) -- Matt Berry passed for 276 yards and three touchdowns as Brigham Young posted a 24-13 victory over Georgia Tech in the season opener for both teams.

Berry had some extra inspiration as he played in front of Steve Young, one of the most prolific quarterbacks in BYU history who had his jersey retired at halftime.

Berry, who wears Young's No. 8, completed 31-of-46 passes and had an interception. His first touchdown pass, a 15-yard strike to Daniel Coats in the third quarter, gave the Cougars (1-0) a 14-13 lead. He added a 14-yarder to Toby Christensen later in the period.

Dan Burnett kicked field goals of 26 and 39 yards and Nathan Burton returned a blocked punt 18 yards for a score for Georgia Tech (0-1), which held a 13-7 lead at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets' offense struggled under true freshman Reggie Ball, who completed 15-of-24 passes for 147 yards and an interception. He also rushed for 39 yards on five attempts.
