Brand Warfield rushed for 173 yards and touchdown to help make Meyer a winner in his debut as Utah rolled to a 40-20 victory over Utah State. After going 17-6 in two seasons as Bowling Green coach, Meyer replaced Ron McBride, who was fired after the Utes went 5-6 in 2002. Warfield also got his senior season off to a huge start, carrying 33 times, including a four-yard touchdown run late in the second quarter that gave the Utes (1-0) a 14-3 lead. Backup Alex Smith tossed two second-half touchdown passes and Brett Elliott threw for a score in the opening half for Utah, which improved to 71-28-4 all-time against its intrastate rival. Travis Cox passed for 280 yards and a touchdown for the Aggies (0-1), who have dropped their last six season openers.
