COLUMBIA, South Carolina (Ticker) -- Virginia's "redefined" season continues Saturday when the 15th-ranked Cavaliers visit South Carolina.
Quarterback Matt Schaub was injured in the Cavaliers' first drive and freshman backup Anthony Martinez led the way in a 27-0 season-opening victory over Duke.
Virginia coach Al Groh refused to discuss the severity of the injury to Schaub, considered a Heisman Trophy candidate. But Groh did say that the injury has "redefined" his team, indicating that Martinez will be the quarterback for at least the next few weeks.
Martinez made his debut for Virginia (1-0) and had pedestrian numbers, completing 6-of-15 passes for 76 yards. But tailback Wali Lundy rushed 21 times for 88 yards and one touchdown.
South Carolina (1-0) struggled to a 14-7 win over Louisiana-Lafayette last week. Kenny Irons snapped a tie with a seven-yard touchdown run with 1:38 remaining.
Dondrial Pinkins, making his third career start after starting the final two games of last season, completed 16-of-34 passes for 184 yards.
South Carolina coach Lou Holtz won his 239th career game, passing Woody Hayes for sole possession of eighth place on the all-time list. Holtz is third on the active list, trailing Penn State's Joe Paterno and Florida State's Bobby Bowden.
Virginia posted a 34-21 home win over South Carolina last season, taking advantage of seven turnovers by the Gamecocks. South Carolina leads the series, 20-12-1.
Both Groh and Holtz were one-year coaches for the New York Jets. Holtz served in 1976 and Groh in 2000. Virginia is playing at a Southeastern Conference school for the first time since a 19-0 win at Auburn in 1998.
