New Jersey Nets top Washington Wizards 98-85

WASHINGTON (Ticker) -- With Kenyon Martin out, Jason Kidd went from passer to scorer. Kidd scored 30 points and added nine assists to led the New Jersey Nets to a 98-85 victory over the Washington Wizards.

Richard Jefferson had one of the best games of his career with 19 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists for New Jersey (2-1). Third-year player Brandon Armstrong also made a major contribution with a career-high 13 points.

Brian Scalabrine started in place of Martin, who severely twisted his ankle in Friday's win over Minnesota. Scalabrine had 12 points and six rebounds.

First-round pick Jarvis Hayes led Washington (1-2) with 16 points. Gilbert Arenas added 12 and Larry Hughes 10.

Washington cut the deficit to 69-65 at the end of the third quarter as Juan Dixon hit a runner in the closing seconds. But New Jersey outscored Washington, 29-20, in the final period as Armstrong scored 11 points in the last eight minutes.
