DENVER (Ticker) -- Shawn Chacon continued his superb start for the Colorado Rockies.

Chacon allowed four hits in seven innings and Charles Johnson and Chris Stynes hit back-to-back homers as the Rockies rolled to an 8-0 rout of the San Diego Padres and a sweep of their three-game series.

A 25-year-old righthander, Chacon (3-0) struck out six, walked two and matched a career high with his third consecutive win.

"It's just another step," Chacon said. "It's still only April 20, so there's a long way to go. The way I see it, there's a big staircase and there's a lot of little steps to take."

Another young starter had a strong home outing for Colorado. In Friday's series opener, Aaron Cook yielded five hits in his first career complete game as the Rockies coasted to a 12-1 rout.

"It's always been a thing about how you can't pitch at Coors Field," Chacon said. "There's no reason why our staff can't pitch well here. ... We're on the good innings of these games when not many runs are scored, and that's just going to make the pitchers more confident and able to attack hitters more."

"He has a lot of confidence, period," added Johnson, the Rockies catcher. "It makes my game so much easier because his stuff is very good. Behind the plate, I have different options to go to. I don't have to stick to one pitch the whole game."

The game was scoreless in the second with two outs and a runner on first when Johnson slugged an 0-1 pitch from starter Jake Peavy (3-1) over the left field wall. Four pitches later, Stynes belted his third homer to make it 3-0.

After going hitless in his previous 16 at-bats, Johnson went 5-for-8 with two doubles and four RBI in two games against San Diego.

"He's starting to get into a little groove now," Rockies manager Clint Hurdle said. "I know he's hungry. He takes a lot of pride in his defense, but nobody wants to go up to the plate and continue to make right turns and come back."

In hitter-friendly Coors Field, the Padres were limited to six singles en route to their sixth straight loss.

"They're going to score runs, it's a good hitting ballclub," San Diego manager Bruce Bochy said. "The key is you've got to score, and we didn't. They shut us down. Two games and we got one run. That's not going to work in this ballpark."

"They obviously have something figured out that we don't over here," Peavy said of Colorado's pitchers. "They pitched a whale of a ballgame."

Jay Payton again impressed offensively against San Diego. He reached on an infield single in the third and scored on a base hit by Preston Wilson to make it 4-0.

Payton's sacrifice fly in the fourth capped a two-run burst and his two-run homerd in the seventh made it 8-0. He has gone 11-for-25 (.440) in six games against the Padres this season.

Colorado recorded its second series sweep of the season. The Rockies also took three in a row at home from Arizona from April 4-6.

Rockies reliever Brian Fuentes tossed a hitless eighth and Jose Jimenez yielded a walk and two hits before recording a scoreless ninth to complete Colorado's first shutout of the season.
