San Diego Padres lose to Colorado Rockies 9-10

DENVER (Ticker) -- Just another routine day at Coors Field.

After squandering a seven-run lead and giving up four home runs, the Colorado Rockies outlasted the San Diego Padres, 10-9, on Ron Belliard's sacrifice bunt in the bottom of the ninth inning of a game delayed by rain for nearly two hours.

Padres first baseman Ryan Klesko, who homered twice and drove in five runs, fielded Belliard's bunt and threw home. But Brent Butler slid in ahead of catcher Michael Rivera's tag, capping the Rockies' three-run rally in the ninth.

"When they gave me the (bunt) sign, I was just trying to put it on the ground," Belliard said. "When I put in on the ground, I just took a peek and he (Butler) was there. I was just happy the run scored."

"Belliard made a nice play," Colorado manager Clint Hurdle said. "He was able to put the ball on the ground and we were able to have a pretty exciting comeback."

Colorado has won seven of its first eight games at Coors Field this season.

The Rockies appeared to be in control early, scoring five runs in the first and one each in the second and third innings to open a 7-0 lead.

"You haven't won a game here until you've won a game," Hurdle said. "You'll never stop playing here until the game is over. It can be a house of horrors, there's no doubt about it."

The Padres began their comeback in the fifth on Mark Kotsay's two-run homer and Klesko's solo shot.

Todd Jones could not hold the 7-3 lead, giving up a three-run homer to Klesko and a two-run shot to Sean Burroughs in a five-run eighth.

"Obviously, he didn't put the ball where we wanted to," Hurdle said. "I wanted the experienced pitcher out there in that situation. Klesko was 0-for-7 against him lifetime and the numbers added up. It was what we wanted to do. We had the right guy in."

Steve Reed (2-0) got the win, despite giving up an RBI single to Klesko in the top of the ninth.

But Padres closer Brandon Villafuerte (0-2) could not nail it down in the bottom half as Jose Hernandez led off with a walk and took third on Preston Wilson's single.

Villafuerte got Bobby Estalella to ground to second, but Lou Merloni's throwing error plated Hernandez and left runners on first and second. After Butler forced Wilson at third, Chris Stynes delivered a game-tying single, setting the stage for Belliard to win it.

"We walked the leadoff batter," Padres manager Bruce Bochy said. "We had a two-run lead and that is just asking for trouble. Villafuerte was just pushing too much."

Following Larry Walker's two-run single in the first, the game was held up by rain for one hour, 57 minutes. San Diego starter Clay Condrey seemed uneffected by the long delay, striking out Wilson and Hernandez after the contest resumed. But he gave up a two-run double to Estalella and a run-scoring double to Greg Norton that made it 5-0.

"This one's on me," Condrey said. "The guys battled back and played a heck of a ballgame. Here, you got to make your pitches. Some places, you can make a mistake. This isn't one of those places."

Walker delivered an RBI triple in the second before Rockies starter Nelson Cruz helped his cause with a run-scoring single in the third.

Cruz, who was attempting to become the first four-game winner in the major leagues, left after five innings with a 7-3 lead.

"I just play for the Rockies," Cruz said. "I don't play for Nelson Cruz. Whenever we get the win, I'm going to be happy about it."
