PHILADELPHIA (Ticker) -- After Jim Thome came up big, so did the Philadelphia Phillies' bullpen.

Thome delivered a two-run triple and four relievers combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, lifting the Phillies to a 5-2 victory over the Florida Marlins.

Baseball's biggest offseason acquisition, Thome continued his hot start with two outs in the third inning, drilling a fastball from starter A.J. Burnett off the right-center field wall to give the Phillies a 3-2 lead.

Philadelphia starter Vicente Padilla (2-1) was forced to leave with one out in the sixth with a contusion of his left forearm. But the bullpen, expected to be a sore spot, came through in the clutch.

Terry Adams came up biggest. With the Phillies clinging to a 3-2 lead in the eighth, the veteran righthander entered with runners on the corners and one out. On his first pitch, Adams induced Ivan Rodriguez to bounce into a double play.

"This (bullpen) is where I made a name for myself," said Adams, who began last season with the Phillies as a starter. "This is where my reputation is. I am comfortable. I love being down there. I love coming in games and doing well and winning."

Jose Mesa worked around a leadoff single in the ninth for his second save. He preserved the win for Padilla, who gave up two runs and three hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

Burnett (0-1) yielded three runs and four hits in five innings. He walked five, struck out seven and threw 113 pitches.

The Marlins gave Burnett a lead to work with in the opening inning. Luis Castillo reached on an infield hit with one out and, after Rodriguez struck out, Juan Encarnacion laced a single into right field.

Mike Lowell then went the opposite way, lining a double down the right field line to give the Marlins a 2-0 lead.

The Phillies got a run back in the second when Mike Lieberthal stroked an RBI single up the middle to score Thome, who opened the inning with a walk.

Making his second start of the season after battling tendinitis in his right elbow in spring training, Burnett struck out Padilla and Jimmy Rollins to start the third before running into trouble.

Placido Polanco walked and Bobby Abreu singled. Thome followed by sending a 2-2 pitch to deep right-center field. Seeming to misjudge it, center fielder Juan Pierre watched the ball carom off the middle of the wall, allowing Polanco and Abreu to score and give the Phillies a 3-2 lead.

Burnett continued to be wild in the fourth when he threw 34 pitches. He surrendered a leadoff single to David Bell and hit Padilla in the left forearm with a pitch with two outs. Rollins walked to load the bases, but Polanco grounded out to end the inning.

"I was all over the place from the second inning on," Burnett said. "But you learn from that, just harness it. You have to take a step back and slow everything down."

Padilla departed with a runner on in the sixth. Carlos Silva entered and induced Lowell to ground into an inning-ending double play.

In the seventh, the Phillies received a break after Alex Gonzalez drilled a ball into the left-center field gap with two outs. Headed for a triple, Gonzalez fell down between second and third base and was easily tagged out.

"You work on that play in spring training when the ball goes in the gap and you trail the runner," said first baseman Thome. "To be honest, I never have had a play like that. Looking at that, it could have been a big play for sure. He could've gotten a triple and who knows what could have happened."

The Marlins attempted to rally again in the eighth. Brian Banks led off with a single to chase Silva. Dan Plesac relieved and Pierre sacrificed.

Pinch runner Gerald Williams went to third on a passed ball by Lieberthal and Plesac walked Castillo. But Adams came on and got Rodriguez to bounce into a double play.

"They (opposing pitchers) have been pitching me tough since the series with the Mets," said Rodriguez, who is 1-for-17 over his last five games. "I'm in a little bit of slump right now, but what I've got to do is keep working."

"You makes those moves and (if) they work, you are a genius," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "If they don't, you are booed."

In the bottom of the inning, the Phillies got to the Marlins' bullpen. Bell drew a leadoff walk against Braden Looper and Lieberthal singled up the middle.

After Ricky Ledee sacrificed, Tyler Houston hit for Adams and grounded a ball just inside the third base bag for a grounds-rule double, making it 5-2.
