CHICAGO (Ticker) -- Corey Patterson's eighth-inning, run-scoring single tied the game and pinch hitter Troy O'Leary added a sacrifice fly later in the frame as the Chicago Cubs rallied for a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
After the Pirates went ahead, 3-2, in the seventh inning on Kenny Lofton's RBI single, Chicago put together a rally against three Pittsburgh relievers in the eighth.
Sammy Sosa opened the inning against Brian Boehringer (0-1) with a double, and when the Pirates' reliever fell behind rookie Hee Seop Choi, 2-0, manager Lloyd McClendon opted for Scott Sauerbeck. Cubs manager Dusty Baker countered by pulling Choi for Eric Karros, who was walked intentionally.
Patterson spoiled the strategy with a single to left field that scored Sosa with the tying run.
"Right now I'm focusing on staying relaxed at the plate and hitting the pitch I want to hit and not the pitcher's pitch," Patterson said. "This was a great team win. Everyone on the bench contributed."
Mark Bellhorn walked to load the bases and McClendon called upon closer Mike Williams. Baker countered with O'Leary, who lofted a fly ball to right, plating pinch runner Lenny Harris.
"Runs are hard to come by sometimes, so a win like this is a real team victory," Baker said. "Everybody did something to contribute and I'm glad we won."
The rally made a winner of Kyle Farnsworth (1-0), who tossed a scoreless top of the eighth. Joe Borowski pitched a perfect ninth for his third save.
"It was a nail-bitter to the end and to fall behind in the seventh when one looks like it will win the game, things weren't looking good," Borowski said. "So to come back against a good pitching club is big for us."
Damian Miller drove in two runs for Chicago, which took the last two games of the three-game series.
Aramis Ramirez had a two-run double in the third for the Pirates, who have lost five of eight since opening the season with four straight wins.
"We had them right where we wanted them," McClendon said. "They battled back and had some good at-bats to pull one out."
Matt Clement followed Kerry Wood's strong start Saturday with one of his own for the Cubs. The 28-year-old righthander permitted three runs - one earned - and four hits in seven innings. He struck out five and walked two.
"I can't say enough about my teammates," Clement said. "Everybody contributed one through 25. What a great win and in my life I haven't been on a team that wins games like this. It's nice to win the series."
After Ramirez's double gave the Pirates a 2-1 lead in the third, Clement retired the next 12 batters.
Pittsburgh twice went ahead by a run but twice Chicago came back. The Cubs forged a 2-2 tie in the fourth on an RBI single by Miller, who forced in the first run of the game in the second with a bases-loaded walk.
"It was disappointing today as a team because this was a game we had a chance to win and we didn't," said Pirates starter Kip Wells, who gave up two runs and three hits, struck out six and walked five in six innings.
"You have to give them credit for having hitters who can swing the bat, and they did when they had opportunities. But that's how the game goes sometimes and why you play nine innings."
