MIAMI (Ticker) -- Mark Redman was right at home in the National League.

Redman struck out a career-high 10 batters in 6 2/3 innings and Mike Lowell hit one of three homers for the Florida Marlins in an 8-3 win over the Philadelphia Phillies.

Acquired from the Detroit Tigers in a January 13 trade, Redman (1-0) allowed two runs - one earned - and scattered seven hits while walking one. The lefthander, who was just 8-15 a year ago, allowed a solo homer to David Bell in the fourth.

Redman left the game with just a one-run lead before the Marlins scored five times in the seventh.

"I wanted to step it up a notch and shut down the bleeding that we had," Redman said. "I was just throwing the ball over the plate and getting ahead."

Redman had struck out nine on two other occasions, most recently on August 7, 2000 at Tampa Bay. One of his few mistakes was to Bell, who hit the first homer of the season for Philadelphia.

"I went after hitters," Redman said. "I gave up a solo shot and it wasn't going to hurt me."

Ivan Rodriguez delivered a two-run triple and Lowell added a three-run blast off Rheal Cormier to help the Marlins salvage the finale of the three-game series.

"I knew we had a good ballclub, but the way we played the first two games, nothing was working for us," Marlins manager Jeff Torborg said. "Our bats came alive and our pitching set the tone. Their pitching set the tone the first two games."

Lowell was among the Marlins losing his patience with the slow start and was happy that the team was flexing its muscles instead of playing "small ball."

"I told you guts that's a bunch of (garbage)," Lowell said. "About two guys are going to bunt on this team and everybody else is going to swing the bat."

The Phillies won the first two games by a combined score of 18-7. Jim Thome had a pair of hits for the Phils and had seven hits in the series.

Juan Encarnacion, who was hitless in his first eight at-bats of the season, hit a two-run homer in the second that followed a single by Derrek Lee.

Alex Gonzalez added a solo shot later in the inning off loser Vicente Padilla (0-1), who allowed three runs and six hits in six innings.

"Padilla threw good. He had one bad inning where he left some pitches over the plate," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said. "The other guy pitched good, too."

The Phillies had scored eight runs in each of the first two games of the series, but did not have a homer until Bell connected in the fourth to make it a 3-2 game.

Placido Polanco had a run-scoring single in the third and Bell made it a 3-2 game with his homer an inning later.

The Phillies put runners on first and third with two outs in the seventh before Vladimir Nunez replaced Redman and got Polanco on a fly ball to right.

Mike Mordecai and Juan Pierre singled in the seventh and scored on the triple by Rodriguez. Lee walked and stole Florida's second base of the inning to set the stage for Lowell's homer. All of the runs in the inning were charged to Cormier.

"That's not what I needed to do," Cormier said. "It wasn't the best effort, but I got that first game out of the way."

Armando Almanza and Braden Looper each pitched one inning to complete the win.
