Seattle Mariners over Anaheim Angels 8-2

ANAHEIM, California (Ticker) -- Jamie Moyer reached a milestone in a city where he hasn't had many fond memories.

Moyer tossed seven scoreless innings and Bret Boone delivered a timely three-run homer as the Seattle Mariners continued their fine play of late with an 8-2 triumph over the Anaheim Angels.

Moyer (2-1) recorded his 100th win in 149 career decisions with Seattle but entered the game with an 8.15 ERA in Anaheim. On Friday, he scattered seven singles and two walks.

The 40-year-old lefthander also ran his winning percentage since the start of the 1996 season to .684 (106-49) - the best in baseball over that span among pitchers with 15 decisions per season.

"I didn't think it was a big deal that Moyer won his 100th game with Seattle," Boone said. "I thought it was a big deal when he won his 100th game in the majors. He was awesome as usual. He pitched a great game. He's pitched 14 innings against the Angels this year and given up no earned runs, which is tough against a lineup like that."

The Mariners, who have won six of seven games, made the most of their eight hits and Boone delivered the big blow, crushing an opposite field homer off Angels starter Ramon Ortiz (2-2) in the fifth. Boone's fourth homer of the season staked Seattle to a 5-0 lead.

"Ortiz had kept the ball down but he got one up and away which I hit for a home run," Ortiz said. "That's where I like the pitches."

Seattle scored twice in the second, on a sacrifice fly by Mark McLemore and a run-scoring double by Mike Cameron, and Moyer struck out Tim Salmon with the bases loaded to end the third.

The game remained 2-0 into the fifth. Dan Wilson doubled with one out but Ortiz got Ichiro Suzuki to pop out. Randy Winn walked on a 3-2 pitch and Boone lined a 1-0 pitch over the wall in right-center field for a five-run cushion.

"The big pitch was obviously the pitch to Salmon in the third," Seattle manager Bob Melvin said. "He got him on a changeup outside. He threw changeups at three different speeds, 71, 74 and 76, and his fastball looks like a major league fastball."

"I was well aware of the crowd," Moyer said of the pitch to Salmon. "I wanted to make a special pitch but he kept fouling it off. I knew it was a key point of the game. I wasn't expecting to strike him out and I wasn't sure what to throw him."

Anaheim had two hits in the fifth and one each in the sixth and seventh but could not score.

"There were too many wasted chances," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "We left 10 men on base, the strikeout of Salmon in the third was a key play. We usally hit Moyer well in Anaheim, we just haven't been able to hit him anywhere."

John Olerud's two-out RBI double in the eighth pushed Seattle's advantage to 6-0 but the Angels finally cashed in against the Mariners' bullpen in the eighth.

Arthur Rhodes took over for Moyer in the eighth and surrendered an infield single to Darin Erstad. Tim Salmon followed with a base hit but was forced at second on a ground ball by Garret Anderson.

Jeff Nelson followed and struck out Troy Glaus but Shawn Wooten and Brad Fullmer delivered RBI singles to get Anaheim within 6-2.

Cameron and Carlos Guillen opened the ninth with doubles and Boone made it 8-2 by squibbing an RBI single into right field.

Former Angel Shigetoshi Hasegawa started the ninth for Seattle and kept his scoreless innings streak intact by inducing a double-play grounder and getting Salmon to pop out.
