BRONX, New York (Ticker) -- After using five of their six relief pitchers Monday, the New York Yankees needed a strong performance from starter Mike Mussina. The veteran righthander gave them just that and then some.

Mussina was brilliant over eight innings, allowing just three hits as the Yankees posted a 5-0 victory over the Toronto Blue Jays.

"He was on fire," Toronto first baseman Carlos Delgado said. "He was really effective. He had the best fastball I've seen since he was on Baltimore. He had a good fastball and good location. His curve was working well too. When a pitcher has good stuff to go with good control, it's tough to hit against him."

Mussina (3-0) struck out nine and walked just two. Rookie Jason Anderson pitched the ninth inning, striking out Vernon Wells to end the game.

Anderson issued a leadoff walk, but immediately got a double play as he made up for a poor outing on Monday in which he walked three while retiring just one batter.

"I didn't want to sit there and think about it for three or four games," Anderson said. "I think (manager Joe Torre) knew taht and I'm glad he gave me the opportunity to go out there."

Jorge Posada homered and Bernie Williams had a pair of RBI singles as the Yankees improved to 11-2 for the first time in team history. Robin Ventura had a run-scoring single and Nick Johnson added an RBI double for New York.

Roy Halladay (0-2), allowed five runs and 10 hits in 6 2/3 innings and could not match Mussina's performance as the Blue Jays lost their sixth straight game.

Between Frank Catalanotto's single in the fourth inning and Eric Hinske's hit in the eighth, Mussina retired 12 straight batters.

"Tonight was the best stuff that I've seen him have in the past six years," Catalanotto said. "His fastball had more zip on it and his breaking pitches were breaking harder. He just pitched really well."

Catlanotto, who has fared well against Mussina, went 1-for-3 with a walk. He is now 13-for-29 (.448) in his career against the righthander.
