Anaheim Angels over Seattle Mariners 3-0

SEATTLE (Ticker) -- Jarrod Washburn bounced back in a big way for the Anaheim Angels.

Washburn tossed eight superb innings and Brad Fullmer hit a two-run homer to lead the Angels to a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners.

After being touched for four runs and eight hits in 6 2/3 innings in his season debut against Oakland on April 5, Washburn (1-1) came back strong Thursday, yielding five hits while walking one and striking out one.

"I had pretty good command of my stuff," Washburn said. "The first couple of innings, I didn't have too good command, but then I figured some things out. I was hitting some spots pretty good. It was not the best stuff I have had, but it was pretty good."

"He wasn't hitting 95 (miles per hour) on the gun, but his ball had plenty of hop," Seattle manager Bob Melvin said. "There were some high strikes called today, which kind of played into his hand. He took advantage of that."

Fullmer supplied all the offense Washburn needed, belting his third homer of the season in the third inning to power Anaheim to its second road win of the season.

Troy Percival worked around a walk in the ninth to notch his first save.

"One of these times, I will get through eight (innings) and we'll be up by five instead of a save situation," said Washburn, who is still in search of his first career shutout. "When you've got a guy like Percy down there in the bullpen, I don't feel bad at all about giving him the ball. I want to get a shutout at some point in my career, but a win is more important than any personal achievement."

"He probably had 10 to 12 pitches left, but we didn't see any reason to have to push it," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "It's a terrific game by Wash and under some other circumstances, depending on where our bullpen is, we would definitely consider sending him out there."

Ryan Franklin (1-1) took the loss, surrendering three runs and eight hits in six innings with three walks and two strikeouts.

The loss dropped Seattle to 0-5 in night games this season.

Franklin retired the first two batters he faced in the third before issuing a walk to Darin Erstad. Fullmer followed by blasting an 0-1 offering into the seats in right field to give the Angels a 2-0 lead.

"I just got a fastball that he didn't locate where he wanted to," said Fullmer, who is 7-for-14 with two homers against Franklin. "It's just one of those things. I have gotten some mistakes and made the most of it."

"I really threw that pitch where I wanted to," Franklin said. "I was thinking I wanted to throw on the inside corner and I threw there and he hit it. He's a tough out and I've just got to figure a way to get him out."

Anaheim staged another two-out rally in the fifth.

Fullmer and Garret Anderson stroked back-to-back singles before Troy Glaus, who returned to the lineup after missing a game with a hamstring injury, had an RBI double to left for a 3-0 cushion.

The Mariners had few opportunities to break through against Washburn, who improved to 6-4 lifetime against Seattle.

With two outs in the fifth, Willie Bloomquist tripled but was stranded when when Dan Wilson grounded out. It was Bloomquist's sixth hit in as many career at-bats against the Anaheim lefthander.

"Willie played well offensively and defensively," Melvin said. "He got a couple of hits and he's one of the few guys that did."

Ichiro Suzuki and Randy Winn had consecutive two-out singles in the eighth, but Bret Boone flied out to straightaway center to stop the threat.

"We couldn't push anything across," Melvin said. "Our best chance was in the eighth inning. We get a couple of guys on and Boonie hits a ball as hard as he can hit a ball and if it gets a little air under it, it's a tie ballgame. But he just lines it right to the center fielder and it just wasn't meant to be."
